Spring Excitement !!!

We have had a bit of a warm up the last few days so I was able to put a couple of trees outside. It is going to get cold again (low temps below freezing) tomorrow through Wednesday. There is a real possibility for snow Tues/Weds  so the trees are back inside.

It almost hit 60 today and I did actually work on a few trees today and it felt great to be outside again in the fresh air. I got to use my new die grinder and what an awesome tool it is!

Been repotting like mad during the warm days, all of my maples are pushing leaves. The haw got repotted yesterday, everybody back and snug in the greenhouse for the next blast of snow and cold. Looks like maybe the last long stretch... I hope.
Brian, love your trees, you should show that haw, and I like the hairy tree too! Beauty.

We are having similar weather and I do not do the "plant dance". I have been leaving the shed door open during the best days but I won't be repotting for what I am guessing to be another week or two.

The polar vortex irregularity this year affected northern China in quite the opposite way to much of the U.S. Actually, I think California's experience this year and northern China's were related to the same causes. We had an amazingly warm winter. I remember standing outside on January 1st thinking how I couldn't recall in all of my memory experiencing such a comfortable new year's day (though the stats for eastern Virginia tell me otherwise). The Hi/Lo was 52/30 that day in Beijing, whereas the average is 33/18. The stats tell me that Beijing has never recorded nicer weather on January 1st.

Anyway, that bubble of warmth seems to have influenced weather patterns into spring, and we're getting record highs again (in the 70's the last couple days). I've already repotted a couple trees which were on the verge of leafing out, and it looks like this next week just about everything else will probably start to burst to life as well.

Among other things, I look forward to developing branching on some long-neglected peach trees, starting work on the root mass of a Chinese elm, doing branch work and carving on my honeysuckle, and doing some carving on a newly collected peach stump. I've also got some hawthorn and Prunus davidiana seeds that I'm hoping will sprout and someday be used for bonsai.

However, I'm also concerned that the warm winter may have caused some trees to experience insufficient chilling hours. I have no idea how that will affect things, and can only wait and see.

For those that viewed the "Bloodgood Question" Thread, here is an update. I'm going to continue to work with this tree. I'm glad I chopped it.

That is nice Vince, especially seeing it bloom. Are you sure it is a Bloodgood? The leaves on mine stay red for quite sometime. It is still nice and a good find.

John,

The general consensus from the "Bloodgood Question" Thread is that it was tagged incorrectly. Most think it is a green maple. I have two other small bloodgoods and they have much much larger deep red leaves now. Maybe with these spring photos the mystery will be solved; or not. Whatever it is I like it and after all that's what really matters. As always, thanks for the input.

Brian, you have some Awesome Trees ! Thank you for the time you take to photograph and make detail notes of your work and share here. Your web site/blog has some really good information, I think you could take a Charlie Brown Christmas Tree and make it into something :)

Thanks!
