How do you keep squirrels out of your pots? I'm surrounded by large pecan trees and squirrels are plentiful. They keep digging in my pots. Any known remedies? Thanks in advance!

1000, exactly 1000 smallest sewing needles you can find. Or better yet, hypodermic needles. And place them all over top of soil. Use a good size magnetand gloves to pick them up when needed.

Them meddling squirrels dug deep into my ailing Hinoki and now it's all but dead :(

Hey Hbomb, are they digging into potting soil? I find squirrels will devestate anything in potting soil but they totally ignore my trees that are in bonsai soil or lava rock

I hate squirrels more than anything and almost quit bonsai before I started because of them, but I realized anything in rocky soil went untouched

For some plants in "grow box" size containers, I've used cut up sections of cane roses, but to keep the cats from shitting' in the box... works wonders on cats... dunno about squirrels though.

Just as an experiment, you might try to chop up some Ghost peppers and mix them in with a big gob of peanut butter... but don't forget to set up a GoPro before you did it, I'd like to see how the snack tastes for them...

I ah e noticed his too. Scoria (lava rocks) on the soil seems to almost completely deter them from rooting around in he dirt...
I don't' think have enough of it to use in every pot though....
I think I am going to use heart throb's snake suggestion, see how it works for me!
The rubber ones don't attract more snakes do they? You know how they use statues of female animals sometimes to lure in the males in hunting, or duck decoys... these snake decoys aren't going to call in all the honey snakes to my yard or make them think it is a snake protection zone or something are they? LOL

You ain't afeared of snakes are ya Eric?... :P

Mind you, all we have here are garder snakes and those little green water snakes... you guys have some snakes that a feller aught to be afeared of...

17 HMR is my favorite, but if you live in town an order Benjamin is a bit quieter.

Good point; I guess that depends on your interpertation of a serpent? ;)

I live in Florida...snakes are everywhere, so I can't say. Snakes eat rodents. Sounds like a win-win to me.

I had an issue with squirrels chewing my girlfriend's succulents and pulling up some of her voodoo lilly bulbs. Went to Dollar Tree, got the most realistic looking toy snakes they had; not the bright funny ones. Put them out and haven't had an issue since. Its been months. A little silly but they take up no space.

A breeding pair of mockingbirds ran the squirrels out of my yard. Those might be hard to find though.

Rather than killing use pumice, lava or similar. Here have found they love to dig under moss if present. Should keep to minimum. Also can keep trees in screened in area and see if "Rodent Sheriff" works as advertised on TV;). Have heard also that shiny tags or streamers that blow around in wind keep these or birds away. Jays dig in my pots as well.
