So i got this sweet olive pre-bonsai from a bonsai nursery, it smells amazing and i'm pretty excited! Any Styling ideas?

Nice piece of material. The top needs to be reduced down to one of the new shoots, which can be trained upward to build a new apex. Otherwise, you have the branching already to make a good informal upright style.

its been chopped and wired and it is shooting rays like crazy. will update, i would like to hear some opinions

I agree with Zach, I would cut the trunk and that side branch way back. In fact, I have a similar olive that I've cut way back (two inches about soil line)to make it a shohin (under eight inches). You'll probably find this virtual too extreme but it gives you an idea about what I'm talking about. I think it shows off the trunk more.

i thought the same. i was worried about it bouncing back but it seems it has no problem with new groth, right now this is my healthiest tree which is sad

What is a "sweet olive" or is this some sort of privit?

I wondered the same. I "googled" it and apparently it's a species known as Osmanthus fragrans a member of the Oleaceae family. So, technically, it is an olive, just not in the genus Olea like most olives I'm familiar with.

So i chopped down the trunk a bit, although i think i will end up taking it down to the next set of branches

I had never considered using one of these for bonsai, but bought one a few years ago for the yard. The flowers are perhaps the nicest fragrance of any plant I have ever come across.

I agree. The flowers are the best smelling flowers I have ever smelled.
