The 2022 Yamadori/Collecting Thread

Nice. I've never collected hawthorn. Is there a reason why you don't cut back further at collection?

Thanks. I believe hawthorns are best collected when dormant and these were budding at time of collection. My thinking is that less trauma will be better chance of survival. And it also makes for more options down the line.

The trees suffering from "should have cut it back further"-itis... are normally NEXT season's strongest trees..

The recovery year is gonna happen anyways... Attempting to learn more proper patience. I've been collecting and lightly pruning THIS year... upon observing trees collected 2 springs ago,

Can we still collect trees in the South in May & June? I have 2 species in mind: Live oak Quercus virginiana and water elm Planera aquatica.

You guys are so greedy!!
😂😂😂

I can't even collect until right around April!!!

..Talking like, "Oooh! my collecting season is SOOOO short!...can it be LONGER?"

😂😂😂

Just playing around!

I actually DON'T have an answer to your inquiry.. (I know you can collect almost any tree anytime if you are fully aware of health/aftercare parameters and willing to provide.)

Only bitterness.

Hahahaha!!

I asked because a friend whom I recently introduced to bonsai really wants me to help him collect some live oaks on his land to get him started on the species. The water elm is my own desire :) I am not sure I can find it.

I figure if I am going to walk the land and look for live oaks, I might as well add water elm to the look out list.
If I find any may be we can horse trade later :)

Just got this amur out a few days ago. Really excited about the deadwood
Careful! ;)

Amurs keep on "rollin back" if they aren't happy. (I know YOU know this.. just wanted to point it out to those LESS experienced with the specie)

Nice, beefy specimen!!

I d say te major damage happened at least 2 years ago. Hopefully happier in my care

Last fall the house next door was demolished, and a 65,000 pound excavator left this apple tree off to the side. ZOINK. A beast this big would have taken all day to dig up.

I was hoping for more buds all over, but at this point I'll be happy with survival in the first season.

I was at a construction site and a tree removal guy piled up a bunch of waxleaf privet. I guess another crew was coming by later to grind them up. There were about 15. I got permission to take as many as I wanted. They are very commonly used as shrubs here. I only took one. I'll be happy if it survives. Should be fun to style of the next few years...

Hi!

Just a quick follow-up on my ligustrum collection from April, one month day for day for the first tree, a week later for the second one.

Both trees are alive, back budding from everywhere, one performs better than the other but I had to reduce the root mass much more then expected compare to the first tree, I had to remove much more then expected.
It still survived, not in the exact same state as the first one but it will recover Im sure!

One thing I also tried is to cover the cuts with paste for one and nothing on the other.
So far both tree dont buds close to the cuts but down to a collar, so all the material left could be carved into "chemney" if desired.
I plan on wood carving theses trees and Im wondering if paste versus bare cut surface could chance anything In term of deadwood condition when ill start the work in 2-5 years?!

Lots of backbudding in this area

Nice little twin trunk alder I dug on 5/18/22. Nothing spectacular but I like it. Easy dig too, lots of radial surface roots and not tap root.

Here it is today in a pond basket. I'll end up chopping those smaller trunks on the right shorter, but I wanted some buds and branches on them so the tree doesn't drop them in favor of the much stronger main trunk.20220521_213401.jpg

Collected this the first week of March in the middle of Missouri. Loved the super rugged bark on it. Thought it was a goner, but It just popped 5 buds last week (first week of June). Now I’m wondering what it is!
