Took the afternoon off work and collected 3 bald cypress and 1 Mayhaw. I had some hope that one of the BCs has knees but that was not true. The knees were from a near by big cypress. Once again these were unwanted trees that I collected and save.

You got the life, so when is the BC bonsai nursery gonna be officially open to the public? I can see the sign now, CJR bonsai , Louisianas best and only bald cypress bonsai nursery. Turning trash to treasure on a daily basis!

Planning to collect a large burning bush in my neighbors yard this spring. The neighbor tried to kill it 5 or 6 years ago buy hitting it with his snow plow. Because of this, it has a deformed almost lateral thick trunk. I will post pics when I start in April.

I ran out of breath trying to get that one out of the ground. Wound up having to run my long climbing rope to the truck to help pull it.That second one are you kidding me!! You gotta be running out of space by now

I'm hoping to do some real collecting again this year, but I will definitely be doing some backyard collecting. My yard is a bit less than half an acre of minimally developed woods. I'm in the process of clearing out all the invasives and will start planting natives this year. The last two years I've been clearing the English Ivy and hope to have that mostly removed/contained by the end of this year. I also pulled out all the nandina last year (nothing worth saving).
My next task is to remove all of the privet and wisteria and I think some of them could be worth turning in to bonsai. Either way they are getting dug up, so I I'll play with them for a bit to see what I get.

Several small Chinese Privet that I will try to make into shohin size trees:
A couple of medium size Japanese Privet that might not be worth keeping, but I'll probably chop them low and see what happens:
A larger Japanese Privet that I'm still trying to decide what I want to do with. I really like the shape of the trunk and can't decide if I want to chop it low and grow it back out over many years or keep some of the existing branching and have more of a patio tree than a bonsai. Maybe I'll take some more pictures and create a separate post on this one for opinions.
Wisteria:
The last one is a very large Chinese Privet. Most likely I will just cut this one down, but I have contemplated doing some extreme trunk carving on it and see if I can grow something interesting out of it. However, it seems like it will be a lot of effort to remove (alive) with little likelihood of getting something worthwhile. We'll see how energetic I feel over the next 2-3 months.

What time of year should I be collecting Live Oak?
I don't collect oak, but would say when you see new growth coming in the spring.
