The starter Ficus repository!

My brother gave me this ficus he got from a lady at work for free. It has been very neglected, example the glued on rocks (which I have since removed). Looks like it has been chopped once, but the growth is very leggy. I feel like I need to at least try and do something to it, since he was trying to be nice giving it to me. I would appreciate some direction. Chop lower, bury the tubes? new ficus.jpg new ficus 2.jpg

Feed fertiliser for one month, once a week. Sun and then decide if you want to
cut down low to start over.
As usual cuttings to test on and not mother.

After the regrowth, maybe a larger but not deeper pot. As they used to say - pot up.
Good Luck
Good Day

I reckon if you are brave you could turn that in to 2 or 3 new trees @Carol 83 , not done so myself but have one I have been thinking about doing to so if anyone has any pointers that would be cool.

Also wondering if I can lay a ficus on it's side and plant it as a raft style, pretty sure I recall seeing something like that in the past.

Decided it was time to pop some wire on the tiger this evening. The air was so blue when I knocked off 3 sets of leaves and buds on the lower branches the dog looked scared.

Next step has to be to balance the vigor to the bottom branches.. but after a resent repot (bare rooted) and defoliation, do you reckon I should let it be for the rest of the season before attacking the top, and let it get some good rootage (the roots were shit).

Nice !
Now let the right lowest branch go free and grow strong to fatten up the lowest part of the trunk to get it ballanced and nice tapered

Cool tree with potentional!

Trying to resist the urge to slip pot it into a perfect smaller pot I know have.. surly it won't notice if I do it India Jones style.. you know.. temple of doomish

I would be tempted to just let the roots fill out that pot ad best they can and take advantage of those famous Welsh summers unhindered.
Depending on how it winters I would do more this time next year. it will handle further work I think but you have a good start as is so let it grow.

This reminds me I need to get some moss on my trees.

So this one has had a rough time of it, it blew off my bench a few times over winter causing some of the damage . I call her the smashed crab.

Yeah I got no ideas either. I can leave it in the pot and grow it out, put it in a nursery pot and grow it out or chop it into as many pieces as feasibly possible and grow them out.o_O

o_O LOL

What about keeping the top and getting rid of those roots? Then from there see which pieces you'll want to remove? Just a thought!

It's a possibility, I find it hard to really find a way of going forward with it.
I'm tempted to just cut some of the bottom roots and see if I can take some root cuttings and then plant it out in a bigger pot and plant it deep and just ignore it for a few years.

Somewhat like the sketches on this post.

At least that way I can feel happy about it.

Guys,Gals,

may I pass on some results from experiments -------------

[1] Apart from the Willow leaf types and the original Ficus b [ we also have a non shiny leaf type ]
the others suffer from major sudden loss of branches for no reason.
Are difficult to get any type of real ramification.

[2] This is why the Chinese use aerial root decorated trunks, with whatever type of "green hat" they can fit on
the shape.

In other words chose your ficus well and know what it can do.
Please don't try to treat all as having the same abilities.
It's a lot of time and effort wasted.

Remember the super ramified Zelkova is a special red leaf type and there are J.Bpine cultivars
with 1 inch needles, so to it is with Ficus.
Good Day

Would 2 months after defoliation be too soon to do it again?
The tree is going nuts, wire cutting in and could do with another clear out.
