Very happy to find this trident maple at a local bonsai meet yesterday. Interesting trunk and in the price range I can afford. ;)

It's June here in S. California so I will sit on my hands and not do any work until next Spring. I will be on the lookout for a bigger nicer pot for this tree.

Staring this tread to track my progress. Any suggestions and advice will be appreciated.

Nice start! That pot size is fine for the tree IF it was more finished, but it still has a ways to go. I would say to make decisions based on what you are seeing:

- If it looks root bound in that smaller pot, slip pot it in a bigger training container to speed up development.

- I don't know if it's the pictures, but the leaves look a bit yellow. Consider fertilizing and watering well going forwards.

- When it grows more and darkens up, consider defoliating before August so that you can make some chops/branch selections before they become a bigger problem.

Have Fun!

Thanks for the advice @Tidal Bonsai. I do have a wooden training box 18" x 12", maybe I should put the tree in spring? I would like to see more root development on this tree.

It is kind of dry when I purchased it yesterday, and I water it well yesterday. I think the tree was placed into the pot recently.

I cant say for sure because I dont know what the size of the cureent pot is. You want bigger, but you also dont want a ton of wasted space that it wont grow into before winter. Slip potting can be done any time of the year.

The local bonsai meet was sick!! My friends and I went home with a truck full of trees and empty wallets.

Like what @Tidal Bonsai said, you can slip pot it into a bigger container if you'd like. Just be careful not to disturb the roots much.

The pot looks small and you mentioned wanting to develop the tree a bit more. Put it in a bigger pot, let it grow this year, fertilize it well. When winter is coming to an end, you can repot and work the roots.
