Ouch, I'd say that is way overpriced but obviously there was a buyer so the market supported it.

Please share a link as to where you guys are buying 35-40 year old Maples for 150 bucks! I got some cash that's absolutely burning a hole in my pocket for deals like that:) Please share your links!

After 20 years in the collection, yeah, it had some problems. A lot of collected natives have issues being containerized for that long. Cold probably contributed to it, but it's recovered and then some and is going strong now. FWIW, Vaughn Banting's BC --also collected in La.--has had no problems and it's been in the collection longer. Also, there are no Fla. collected BC in the collection as far as I know...I wonder why?
I bought a collected BC from wigerts last spring, offered zero protection this last winter and it got down to 10f at least 5 times, no problems at all. Just wanted to throw that out there, not agreeing or disagreeing with you as I don't have any Louisiana BC.

I can't think of a better person to have such a specimen tree for $550 than you.

Typical Sawgrass thread. Takes him 10,000 words to ramble and look even more like an idiot.
Was wondering where Rockm's Bitch was?
Just in the nick of time as usually...
A dollar short, and a day too late.
Lol!

Have a good day my friend!
Your intrest in jumping on the pile... even though the pile has already gotten back up and headed for home... always seems to amuse me!

One day we will have to get together for beers... First round is on me!

I know Jason Schley always seems to have some. He is located here in Florida, north of me, and always posts trees up for auction on FB.

Not, sure what he has currently, or if they are a good deal or not?

But, always a nice guy and worth a try... and he does ship.

Riddle me this...why on earth would you think...by my not sharing my contacts...that you win!?! My sides are splitting...it's like you enjoy being poked.

By the way...I have material that has came from Don...Judy has trees from Don...others as well...have material from Don. Do we have other contacts...certainly. Love my tree that I got from Don. He is a stand up guy on how he handled that deal...and helped me by holding it until I was back in the states to take care of it. But people/contacts...yeah I got them.

"Riddle me this", what type of value do you think you add by not offering a solution to what you believe to be a problem? Talking just to hear the sound of your own voice again:) Nice to hear that you have top secret contacts lol.

You try...but it falls flat. I'm so done...waisting my time with the likes of you. Go buzz in another ones ear. And...I do wish you well with your trees. Some personalities clash...it's the way of the world.

I will leave you with this:
A tree's worth is what one is willing to pay for it, my Neagari Satsuki Azalea...others my not feel it worth what I paid. But...I got a heck of a deal than what they go for from Matt Smith. Though...mine isn't near as tall. So that must be factored in. But...what one pays is what they feel the tree is worth. What another sees may not be the same value in said material. It's like that with every tree. Would I have bought the maple...no, it doesn't appeal to me. But...again, my Neagari doesn't appeal to all. You seen the value of the $550...good for you. Another may not. It's the way bonsai is seen through the eyes of each person who looks at it. You rattle to easily.

Ooh. I must have missed the azalea. Pics, please. Saw some really nice ones at the Dallas convention the other day, for 500 range. Very impressed, but it'd be an irresponsible purchase for me right now.

Sure...can't wait to see blooms this spring. It was held because of a repot and later my leaving the country. Wanted to understand it before doing that. But it's busting with buds on my bench...can't wait for the show. I have to talk myself down when I see more that come up for sale. I could have an entire bench of nothing but. But...then, the one I currently have...wouldn't stand out on the bench as being unique. But...love Neagari style bonsai...so much so...that it's pathetic.

"Go buzz in another direction", lol! This is my thread and I don't remember ever inviting in nor do I remember you offering anything up in trade either. I only remember you giving opinions that caused nothing but problems which no one asked for.

You sure have a lot to say for someone who really has nothing to say.

Here's some footage that I took yesterday of the tree SOME think is not worth much:)

It's really hard to evaluate how much a tree might be worth from a few photos or videos. Photos can either hide significant flaws, or make minor flaws appear worse.

What does this tree have going for it - it's an older, established cultivar that is slow growing - it takes kotohime a while to get to this size.

What are the negatives...I would say the branch structure is not particularly attractive (this is more evident in the leafless phase). Foliage can hide a multitude of sins, so the tree can look better during the summer. Since these are slow growing, rebuilding the branches would be a long term process. Also, the surface roots look like they could use work.

How do the plusses and minuses balance out...tough to say. Is it worth $550? Not to me, based on the photos. It's certainly worth more than $150 just based on cultivar/age/size.

Don may have had it at $550, but that doesn't mean someone would pay that. He certainly has a lot of spectacular trees, and I'm sure many are well priced. But he also has a lot of trees that to me, seem to be very expensive for what they are. I think many others agree, as there have been some sitting on his website for years, and many of his ebay auctions pass without any bids.

@coh ^^^...well written.

Thing with price of a tree we do not know what overhead Don has in them. But each as we all know a tree will appeal to one and worth what they pay. Where another one would not see it. I think that is with any said tree/style and the individual. I don't know the cultivar though well.

Now,there are trees Abqjoe has...that I admire. We all have a few lesser trees on our bench. Ones we are working to see better. Some better than others. This maple of his...looks amazing without its clothes as well as in them. Again personal preference.
