I got this BRT in 3 years ago. I have just been letting it grow near an east facing window. i recently moved to a new place that has an east and south facing window where i’ve put it. i have this really long branch but I want to have a thick trunk and a canopy. where should I make cuts to get the plant to achieve that look over time?
i’ve had a few BRT’s in the past that have died and this is the longest-living one I’ve had so I am nervous to make the wrong cuts

As a new person who's bought way too many tropical plants I've realized because of my environment they grow way slower than their natural environment. Outside & a bigger pot will definitely help, but they'll always be slower because they aren't in a tropical environment. I try to simulate their environment as much as I can, but that's all I can do. I have my BRT under lights during the winter, & humidity is kept high with a humidifier, & it goes outside ASAP.

Leave a branch as low as you can since BRTs will tend to reverse taper and keep any higher up strong branches shorter otherwise they will make the trunk fatten too much at that point. Also cutting the longer branches will cause it to bud back and produce better branching. When you cut a branch leave 1/4 - 1/2 inch from the last leaf node to allow for die back. Once the cut stub dies back you can cut it off. But before you do that make sure it is getting a lot of light for 12 - 14 hrs a day and is growing well, and keep it 70 deg or warmer. In a window it can be much cooler than room temp. Keep a bit on the moist side but not soaking wet and only if temp and light are high enough.
