Wulfskaar's Dwarf Pomegranate

Good question. Pretty much all my deciduous trees do lose their leaves, even Chinese elm. We sometimes drop to 39F at night in the "dead of winter" here 🤪, so I wonder if that's enough. I will find out by late December.
Thanks for your reply. I've got a bit of a home study going on concerning these plants

Got this for Christmas 2024! :)

I will leave it in the pot it came in this year and will repot into much better soil next spring.

It looks like it was plopped into that pot in very organic soil and then had some bonsai soil sprinkled around it and on top of it. Most of that has already washed away during watering and rain.

Today I noticed it has a single flower/fruit!

I have one very similar root over rock. It produced a very nice pomegranate but a squirrel made off with it.

I bet those seeds are absolutely viable. I have ± a dozen that grew from seed from a supermarket pomegranate. I think I'm just going to leave them outside with protection, as they grow all over town here, although likely not the same variety.

Wolfscaar: I'm in So. Cal (zone 10a) as well..where did you get your Dwarf Pomegranate? Locally? There is a full-sized tree across the street from me & right now, it is a blazing orange to chocolate color..very striking..I want one.

I think I will plant them and see what happens!

My gf got it for me as a Christmas gift (2024). I'm pretty sure she got it from Brussel's Bonsai online, as they have them in the same exact pot mine is in. Btw, it will be repotted in spring.

It would definitely be a really cool project to grow a bonsai from seeds of an actual, legitimate bonsai.
I'm going to start 2 different threads; an outdoor thread, and an evergreen (indoors over winter) thread. Most of mine are gently curving leafy sticks, but a few have had remarkable growth and branching. All are over 6", but the most branched are over a foot tall. Yours looks great. Can't wait to see your journey with it.

My Catlin Elm drops it's leaves in my attic in a window, which hangs in the low to mid 40's and at times low to mid 30's but never really freezes. By end of Jan. it starts pushing new buds as the days get longer.

We had 20 F last year (lowest in the last decade) and my dwarf pomegranete managed to survive even at those low temps in a shallow pot, though shaken, perhaps saved by a blanket of snow

Since it was growing very slowly though, I planted it in the ground last spring without disturbing the roots and removed all flower buds whenever they appear (no flowers, no fruits) IDK which worked, but I managed to get much better growth as a result.

If covered with snow the temp under the snow will never go below freezing. In Florida when it goes below freezing they spray the trees in the Orange groves with water to form a layer of ice on them to protect them from going below freezing. I also read some where a long time ago that even Ficus Bonsai would get sprayed for the same reason. It makes sense, even under the Polar ice caps the sea water never drops below 28.4 degrees even when the temps above are minus 40 degrees. So snow is your friend.

I have started growing pomegranates recently and it is great how easy they are to propagate. Cuttings seemingly root easier than other species and the seeds germinate easily and quickly as well. I have a few varieties that I am hoping will take off next year.
