Took a nice hike yesterday looking for some things to possibly collect next year. I found more candidates in the sand next to the river than I did anywhere else. Seems that we have a lot of elms floating around. Anyone know the species? These guys have had a rough life. This beach floods bad when it storms. A few of them were growing through rocks but I scraped around and it seems they may be collectable. A couple others will be a breeze. I'm not sure about how to go about the transition ,they are growing in sand. Anyone ever collect anything from a similar location? Posted a few other photos , was a beautiful day .

Look to be American elm. You chop them to height before digging. I use the 2 inches of height to every inch of diameter. They sprout out of the cut and back bud everywhere out of the trunk.
Once you have it out of the ground take them home and hose all of the native soil from the roots. Cut the tap right off at the base as long as there are feeder roots. You don't need many. Also the tap root in places like tend to not be straight but all twisted. Take that home and plant it too.
Any ways, once the tap root is off cut back any big roots growing horizontal back just back far enough to fit into a collander . Fill with the bonsai soil of your choice and stand back. They grow fast.
