2016 Winter Silhouette Bonsai Expo Kannapolis, NC

Great to have met you, @Grant Hamby . I gotta ask...how did you get the trees to fit into your carry-on bag?o_O:D Great pick ups, by the way...lots of nice trees were available at very decent prices and you did quite well.

Thank you! It was great meeting you as well! The zelkova was small enough to just hold in my hands, though they did swab it for explosives at the checkpoint... haha. As for the trident, I was about to sadly pass it up when Bill's wife offered to ship it to me. She also discounted the price a bit since Bill wasn't going to be around to help her unload everything.

Great show, great people. great time! Nice meeting many of you and I enjoyed getting to know some better. This show is very, very nice... From the first year til now. I hope to attend year after year! An extra special thanks to our host Steven Zeisel who works tirelessly to make this show a huge success for everyone1

Absolutely! He does not get enough credit. As you said, thank you to Dr. Steven Zeisel for making this exhibit possible, helping bring bonsai awareness and education to the public at large.

A few goodies I picked up over the weekend. First up= a sweet Southern Hackberry I picked up from Ed Lauer. Ed, who owns many exceptional bonsai including the juniper that won the Best Conifer award, is/was downsizing his collection and was parting with several trees like this he'd collected and worked on himself....and they were all priced to move quickly. If you can believe it, this was my third choice! The nebari needs some work, but this is a great tree that I got for a steal!

Next up are 2 maple stumps I picked up during the drive home from Marc at The Growing Grounds. The bigger one on the left is a trident and the other is a Japanese maple. Pickings are slim this time of year (I knew that before heading there) but Marc showed me around the place and gave me a decent discount on the two trunks. Again, lots of root work ahead for these two but the trunks make it worthwhile, I think.

What type of maples are they? The trunks look really nice.

Nice stuff Dave!! I picked up some trees myself but mostly all sticks in pots. I did pick up a small but very nice bald cypress from Martin Sweeny and a nice small Japanese beech from Julian Adams. Martin had some excellent stuff for sale at good prices!

Lastly, we have a pot I bought at auction. As Eli/ @hometeamrocker pointed out, this show is put on by Dr. Zeisel, who takes on 100% of the financial responsibility as well as most of the year long footwork necessary to pull off a show of this caliber. Each year, an auction is held where the various vendors along with some of the participants donate items, and the proceeds are given to Dr. Zeisel to help defray his personal financial cost. Eli, who creates wonderful pots at his waldo street pottery, donated this pot to the auction. The pot, measuring 16 x 13.5 x 2.75 inches, is a truly wonderful pot that I'm extremely happy to own now and I commend Eli on his generosity in giving up such a fantastic pot for a good cause. If you want some great home grown bonsai pots, look no further then Eli and waldo street pottery.DSC_0025.JPG DSC_0026.JPG DSC_0027.JPG

@Dav4: I like the color and bark on Hackberry. That's going to be a really fine tree. More pics of it, please! Looking forward to see you work on its nebari, because I'll be facing the same problems on mine.
