Trying first air layers

I visited a friend in Portland, OR and she had these great trees and was gracious enough to allow me to try air layering some branches. I used damp sphagnum moss and rooting hormone.

I am pretty sure I removed all of the phloem and vascular cambium, but I suppose only time will tell.

How do you even know the difference between the layers? I was going off of minor color differences.

I am not sure what Maple this is, but she said she is going to have it removed anyway, so I prepped a couple of branches on it, too. Hopefully I can ramify the leaves down over time.
