My health has been bad again so I'm really behind on tree work. I listened to the bonsai wire podcast episode with Richard Wright where they talked about the cost of holding onto mediocre bonsai material which renewed my push to gather trees to sell at the club meeting next week.

I also planned my work and what trees I'm bringing for the study group meeting tomorrow.

Then I worked on a mediocre green island ficus that I should probably sell.

I sawed the back tree off from the main tree. This is also very overpotted hoping to let it grow a lot if I can keep it happy in the grow tent over winter.

Trying to only root a sane amount of cuttings out of this bucket but now I have sooooo much room in my greenhouse now that I could probably root an insane amount of cuttings.

I volunteered as docent for my club's display pavilion at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens.
95° heat and high humidity kept most people away today. With only 20 visitors in my first 3 hours today, I called it quits at 1 o'clock.
Usually, I would see 60+ visitors in that time period.

As tough as it can be, it is a good process. My collection improved significantly by replacing the bottom 4-5 trees with a much nicer one. I went through several rounds, and ended up with fewer trees to spend more time on. Culling gets a little harder each time if you do it right…probably getting time to run through that excercise again.🥴

Unless the ceiling fans are for you so you can stay cool while working on your trees, they’re probably increasing transpiration without contributing anything of importance. If you turn them off, you might not have to water 5 times a day.
They are primarily for me ....while.... I water. What you say is correct. The only time they are beneficial is iif there is a hard freeze.
Which means.....never. ;)

Deflowered a Satsuki yesterday. Took best part of 5 hours due to the very small leaves on this guy. Usually do this at 80% bloom, but this skidded past that due to the weather.

Going - Better half scaling the remaining images

Gone! …And plenty of folks asking, “What are you doing!” Folks love to see bonsai in action!

…The morning job… once again trimming back the Domoto. (Better half hot dogging it for folks).

This tree was trimmed back only 3-4 weeks ago and extensions were already up to 10” out of profile. Took 3 of us 2.5 hours each to complete it. Lots of ladder work on this guy.

Ceiling fans and 5 times a day water.
Here's why.
Dang... And you live there on purpose?

I've done a bunch of things to my trees but I broke my camera. I know the rules... My thread.

I just finished my shift as a docent, and had to tell a few people that this tree was deflowered yesterday. Wish I had had these photos to show them! Cheers, hoping to get out to a volunteer day one of these days.

I got my @cmeg1 JBP today. I picked back the rockwool block a bit and potted them in a mostly inorganic mix. One of these is going to @Piedmont Bonsai .

I also checked in on my red maple from @WavyGaby . I cut back new growth early this year, defoliated and fertilized heavily. It’s responding well to my abuse 😁

Looking good! That set of trees has nice color a few times a year.

Being 38 I feel like I have plenty of years to improve most of my trees. Now with my health issues I can't work on my trees late into the night like I used to after a 9-12 hour workday. I barely have the energy to water.

This isn't replacing the bottom five trees with one better tree, it's flats and flats of starters and shohin material that were supposed to be for workshops at the plant shop up the road next year. Some of it has already been thrown in the compost. I'm not purchasing better trees, I'm scrapping plans for trees and large forest builds I want to follow through with and drastically reducing my collection. It sucks.

Under the Japanese Maple

Found a Japanese Maple nearby with some friends and sat under it (the owner was kind enough to let us into her yard)

Dang... And you live there on purpose?

Yes, I guess it looks that way. Pure cowardice I suppose. And ennui.
I fooled myself with brighter lights and population but had not yet discovered that a "government town" is packed with civil service mooks who rely on pensions for "success" and whose goal is not to achieve anything but to prevent anyone else from achieving.
Yes I'm stuck here due to age and reluctance to get the hell out....
....of hell.

Any suggestions for how to go about the hunt? We have a couple solid nurseries here and of course FB auctions, but it seems like getting a network of private collectors is really the way to go.

Not really on the hunt for the moment, but have been wondering how to go about that…

Haven’t really sold any before, it’d be hard to sell ones I like, but maybe even harder to sell ones I think are mediocre…. Don’t want to feel like I’m selling junk, haha
