Last (ever?) Mirai Tree Sale

These trees will attract a lot of attention. Whether they are worth the final price or not is personal opinion. Some people will place a premium on the fact that Ryan worked on them. That said, there are a lot of trident maples out there. Once you start talking about prices north of $1000, you can buy a lot of tree.

With that nebari? I’m an idiot but seems like that tree should command a real price

I mean I’m not bidding at these levels but that looks like an expensive nebari to me

On Mirai's auction site is a place to ask questions on each tree. I sent a couple of questions on two this past Wednesday and never heard back. Mirai is happy to take my order for copper wire but have gone "ghost" on auction question.

I wonder if they have naked photos of the deciduous trees at buyers request. Reckon they should, with these price tags. I know sometimes they've been worked on in the livestreams, that would be a good indication of whats going on underneath.

Huh, didn't watch, but doesn't look like there was much final moment bidding. Definitely didn't reach most of Mirai's market values.

I'm surprised by the price of that hornbeam. Interesting and positive development, if you compare it to the valuation of Pederosa and Spruce. I had no clue they were considered to be so valuable.

The Ponderosa and spruce are not as developed as the hornbeam. That particular ponderosa is not really all that terrific compared to many Ponderosa being collected in the Western U.S. nowadays. That ponderosa is notable mainly because it was Ryan Neal's first tree. So it has history. The hornbeam has been worked for some time here by notable bonsai artists here and in Japan.

I could have sworn I saw 15,200 right before it closed and similar number to what trident had. Happened to check with like 2 minutes left. Unless it was showing market value but thought I saw That as I was Showing my wife with the crazy price.

The Korean Hornbeam when I last checked was up to $15.5k … Kinda crazy to me …

Huh, the originals are gone now, but the "final bid" that I saw this morning was $8500. I wonder if they had to disqualify some bids - or the auction home page wasn't updated correctly.

I find korean hornbeam to thicken a lot slower than other species of hornbeam. Maybe the size is an important factor here?
That tends to be true. Korean hornbeam doesn’t get big and once it is, cutting it back severely can result in ugly die back. That was a very very good KH bonsai

FWIW the Scots pine and black pine up for sale are both very nice. Of the two the Scots is better than the black pine but the black pine seems to be getting more bids or at least has topped the Scots in total. Don’t know if that will continue but it’s interesting.

I dont think we can truly say how good the Hornbeam is, without seeing it leafless. The Korean hornbeams are prized for their smaller leaf, in comparison to its European counterpart. Whenever you hear a seller talk about KH, its always the small leaf size thats mentioned, never a slower growth rate, I really dont see a slower growth rate as a factor. FWIW, imported thick trunked KH are very common. Probably as common as thick trunked Tridents.

I don't have Korean hornbeam, so I can't confirm. I found them more "elegant" trees, like some of the orientalis tend to be (and I like it).
Anyway, I was just joking with Bobby since he used to have some bigger European hornbeams, and so do I.

Here's a couple thick trunked KH for sale on ebay.

You obviously pay a premium for any tree, with the Mirai name attached to it, along with the fact many have been worked on by Ryan himself. He's earned that by building up a strong reputation and being one of the best at his craft.
