Be still my beating heart...

This may be off topic, but I think falls under the site maintenance umbrella, what is the photo/attachment size max allowed for posts. It seems whenever I try to post a photo it says it’s too big

4MB per image, 16 images per post max. If you are using even basic image compression, 4MB is a pretty big image.

When I open an image in Windows 10 using the default image program, there's an option to resize the image (click the 3 dots). I resize to 80%, which allows me to upload. I'm sure other image displaying programs have similar functionality.

@Bonsai Nut Thank you! This site has helped my progress enormously. I really, really appreciate everything you do for all of us.

Mine always fail if I try uploading an image that was taken with "burst" or "best shot" mode (android). I have to extract a single image from the burst - or remember to turn it off before I take bonsai pictures...

I just checked and my original cell phone pics (uncompressed) are 36 MB. If I compress them to 80% quality JPEGs they are 2.3 MB... and that is still for an image that is 3072 x 4080 pixels.

I usually reduce the image size to 904 x 1200... and compressed that gets me to 307.9K- like the image below. It is much easier on the site if you are loading threads with 300K images than 4MB images :)

I will try to reduce mine further from now on!

I have raw turned off on my phone - so it's just jpegs. I think selecting a burst for my gallery confuses things!

And I do normally crop as well!

What happens with 3 cups of coffee???!!!🫨🫨🫨
Along with everyone else I want to pass along my thanks for everything you do for all us bonsai nerds.

you do not resize uploaded images?

Great to hear you did this transfer without a problem! Thx

Your news now does mean that I am officially no longer up to date with webservice programming. Dropped my programming sideline 15 years ago, but was then mostly doing php/mysql backend work

I do not resize or optimize any images [EDIT] Sorry, I had to check myself. I DO run optimization on attachments in the database (not through the site software (which is what I did several years ago)). If you are already storing your images in a compressed format (like JPEG or the like) the optimization will be minimal or nonexistent. If, however, you are uploading an image that isn't using any compression, the server will compress it. It has a number of ways to do this that get technical very quickly, but suffice it to say that if you upload a large uncompressed image and you don't like how it is displayed on the site, it is better to compress it yourself to get the output you like best, and then upload it, and the site won't mess with it [/EDIT]. In the "old days" when bandwidth was harder to come by, it was best to use thumbnails in threads, and people would click on them to get a full-sized image. That way the thread would load very quickly, but if you wanted a larger image you might have to wait.

The upload limit of 4MB is currently set on the server as well as the site software, which prevents someone from (for example) trying to upload a 1GB file and lagging out the server. There are a lot of smaller settings that I tweak from time to time, and sometimes they conflict (and I don't know about it) so if you are uploading images and something strange or unexpected happens, let me know.

(For example, the same image saved at 144 K, 41 K, 20 K file size - you can see the compression is dropping color depth and resolution... but it isn't too bad). In this case, because the file (in all versions) is already compressed, the server did not try to compress it further.

90% of the cost of the site comes from our image archive - almost 20 years of images that are stored on fast SSD drives on the server. One large uncompressed image of a leaf can take up as much storage as 100 slightly compressed images.

I'm not sure if anybody else is having issues but it is starting to take quite a bit longer to load the home page and subsequent pages are taking even longer.

nope. Site is twice as fast as before. And I get bell notification again, which were gone the last months.

Yeah, I have been doing some testing and it seems to only be slower just after re-booting my computer. After I access the site once from then on it is fast. So must just be something with my computer.

@Bonsai Nut Hm.. Wondering.. DId the update of server also come with the need for additional adds on the page? I am slightly annoyed now with the adds everyweher, espacially the slide-in adds, but also these adds in the forum overview and the text-adds in individual posts really break the experience of bnut for me.

It has been suggested before. I would consider paying a fee-for-add-free ..

I hardly get any ads. I only use my phone or tablet and they have ad blockers on them.
