This is a cork bark elm that I aquired about a year and a half ago. I couldn't resist due to the caliper of the trunk. I do believe that one day this tree will be something special. At least in my minds eye:D I hesitated to post since it is so early in development, but I love this tree.

The first pictures show its condition when aquired and then its first styling or should I say delimbing:p . I started the intial carving to the hollow as well. The next shows after a years growth. Then we move into the second hard pruning this fall with the final results. The last picture on the next post is what my minds eye is seeing for this tree.

Do you think you will lose the hollow of the tree once the tree grows a little? Elms heal faaaaast :)

I don't believe so. The hollow at the top of the tree was the cut mark from when the grower lopped off the top. I was told that it had been done 10 years ago, so I feel pretty comfortable with the design. Saying that though I'll play devils advocate. If it starts swelling to a point that it appears to be closing. I will use my trusty scalpel and cut back on the callus. Have used this technique a time or two before with success.

Hey there.
Excellent material you have there. I like what you did to it very much. Do you have any updates on this tree? I would love to see how it has changed.

Nigel, Sorry for the tardy reply. Just got back from the Mid-Atlantic Convention. If memory serves me I got those at auction from a grower that went out of business. I had to be good at that auction. So much stuff I wanted. My wife stashed the kids college money.:)

Hey Tom, just saw your post and happens that I have some recent shots from a repotting. As big as this pot is it was still a bit of a shoe horn job.
