Thanks Blake! It was neat voting for members choice award. Though a very hard choice...for classifications I liked so so many. Everyone did an amazing job!

SHOCKED to see my name there...so many amazing trees! We all won...but, for those who voted for me. A huge THANKS shouted out.

SHOCKED to see my name there...

I wasn't shocked, you really did a great job creating your desired style. You should be proud of not shocked at your accomplishments. Confidence is a big part of learning new things and each time I work on a tree it gives me just a little more. I hope the traction is there for a next one. There seems to be some second thoughts within the forum. For me, I will still be buying cheap stock to practice on even when I'm confident in my ability to style a shrub to look like a tree. If anything, it's great practice. Thanks Blake!

Just my opinion, but I think it would be better to have a confidential vote via PM prior to the announcement of the official judges results, much like what was described by yourself or Blake about the people's choice award at a car show. A little more work, but less chance for a biased vote.

I was working on a recently picked up nursery tam juni yesterday all day, and am about to get back at it. Thanks to you Vin this was your challenge and it turned out great. Threres always going to be those few in the group who feel the need to grovel and complain, I compare them to a car with a soon to go out squeaky idler pulley/belt, just turn up the radio no more bad idler. Eventually it will need replaced but for now just enjoy the ride.

agree completely next time we will try to work the members choice in a little better.

This was a pretty cool challenge,I hope y'all do more like this.

Thanks Vin! I guess you have a point...it's just... There were just so so many amazing trees to choose from. From what we all had to work with I think it is amazing.

I for one sure hope we do this again! Though some more advanced people might not see the point in it. I do like where it's going. With the talk of sketches as well. That should be interesting...I sure hope we're allowed additional time to make constructive sketches if they are involved. That in itself seems far upping the challenge in itself. And for those who this isn't there thing...that's okay. Not everything is for everyone. But, I still think we'll have enough interest to keep it going. Or at least hope so.

Derek. Hopefully "we" and not "yall".! Join in!

I cant wait till spring! More specifically the Spring BSC!

Speaking of cars. You don't buy your teenager a new car to smash. You but em a junker.

Why should us newbies destroy good material!? Better we keep doing this I reckon.
If these trees live or die, we will learn our path to good material.

My confidence will get better every season.

All the advance people that post here were either in the competition or like Dorthy and ChrisV
were unable to get ahold of material in time... I have only seen one individual who has said
anything negative, and that was because this individual didn't believe we should be wasting
our time on such beneath us material. Usually in a situation such as this, you will find, that the
reason for them not joining and participating in the fun, is because they are afraid that everyone
will actually see what they can do... or not do... so, much easier to just poop on the parade !!!

I'll be in the next one. Couldn't find a thing near me. Can't wait.

Well said and thank you for the vote of confidence! I'm definitely on board for another challenge and it sounds like there's support for it with others as well. Maybe we'll have even more members join the fun :D

I would like to see a two or three month "material gathering" time frame for the next challenge. That should be plenty enough time to find something. The more members that get involved the better as far as I'm concerned. I'll bet the B-Nut Server hit was pretty high over the couple weeks leading up to the reveals.

I'm looking forward to the springtime challenge, my local box stores are usually more stocked up on material then.

Can we move to bigger trees?

"Y'all" is the southern hillbilly coming out in me:D what I meant was whoever made the BSC happen I would like to see it take place again. I was bummed that I missed this one when I saw it. I was too late by the time I saw the post. I will defiantly take part in the next one. I think a challenge like this is great and I wish that we could come up with more.

I know I am going to catch hell from some on the material I have to work on at my experience level. I have and continue to use nursery stock when I run across something I see potential in. To me the best way to learn is to push myself and my material to be better. The most important thing to me is the health of the tree and not rush anything. If I buy a really nice piece of material I might not touch it for a couple years and just focus on the health and have many "stare offs" with it.I read some people on here hitting a lull or plateau in bonsai and I would probably run into the same problem if i didn't take some risks and push myself to acquire better material.having a old complex piece of material in my possession keeps the creative juices flowing and gives me motivation to be better. To me there is nothing better than having decent material in front you to brainstorm on all the options of its future. I know that everyone's budget is different when it comes to purchasing material but the more I have gotten deeper into bonsai the more I see good material everywhere. Sure your probably not going to find a old Japanese species laying in a neighbors back yard for you to barter with him on but a old nasty privet, boxwood, common juniper are in abundance. Or whatever grows in your area you get my point. I have been an avid hunter since I was a kid and spend countless hours in the woods.i now study trees just as much as I hunt when I'm in the woods. I carry a shovel with me in my truck every time. if I run into a tree that I see allot of potential in I collect it if the timing and roots allow or I dig a troff around it and wait till the following year. I have collected a few decent pieces of material this way. Now I'm not advocating for every tom, dick and Harry to go dig up some ancient world class tree either but I think in order not to hit a lull or plateau in bonsai I think one needs to push for more challenging material.
Most of us will never have the experience of some of these bonsai masters.does that mean we should never work with good trees? I can't see limiting myself on a piece of material that I have a opportunity to get. I can't see myself in a situation where I have an great tree in front of me that I see allot of potential in and tell myself I not worthy of that tree and pass it up.if I am un certain on how to care for that tree I will research and take the precautions needed. As far as destroying the material, yeah it's a possibility and it's greater than someone with 25 years experience. Just play it safe, it's bonsai you have all the time in the world.
Just my two senses and maybe I see things differently or even wrong :D

Just my two senses and maybe I see things differently or even wrong :D

You only have "two senses" - just joking! Hey, you don't sound that much different than myself and probably the majority of others here. We are all consumed by those damn little green trees. Like most forms of art, you have to push the limits in order to excel and maybe someday actually produce a work of art that will cause people to think or express emotion. I don't know crap compared to most on here yet it never ceases to amaze me when someone finds out I'm into bonsai and I show them some photos of things I'm doing. To me they look amateur and even silly yet they look at them in sheer amazement.

Interesting story: I collected some shrubs from someone who posted them on Craigslist the final day of submission of the BSC photos. An older couple in their late 70's just purchased a house and wanted to do some landscaping. I was there about 4 hours digging up my treasures. When I was done, June (I'll never forget her name) the owner asked what I was going to do with them. Reluctantly, I told her the truth and showed her some photos on my iPhone of a few of the trees I have been working on. She was nearly crying in astonishment and just kept saying how beautiful they were. Talk about a feel good moment!
