$100,000 Garden

Source,
Find a location that you like and can afford, then see every house for sale in that area, even ones you can't afford. Agent will hate this, but you want to know the upside of the area. Get the biggest lot you can afford too. Like Will Rogers said "Buy land, they ain't makin any more of the stuff".
Have fun man.

Congratulations, take your time, do your homework and ask questions to find out anything you don't know. The only dumb question is the one you don't ask. Heck, ask all of us, between all of us we know everything. And the most important, make it fun, not a job.
Were the experts!

Maybe y'all oughta head for Colorado! You can build your eco house and grow that patch of marijuansai you always wanted.. You'll get more visitors...

Awesome @sorce - good luck with the whole process. Buying my house was one of the best moves I've made. The criteria that were important for me were:

Single family detached structure with No HOA! (i.e. no condos, etc.)
Secure yard
2 car garage (workshop/office, a car has only been in there twice)
I could afford with 20% down and a fixed rate loan (I'm old fashioned)
I also red-lined certain areas of town where I wouldn't be comfortable living.

I ended up buying a foreclosure - someone else's mess, with solid bones (good home inspector is key). Then I did a ton of work myself - paint, flooring, punching holes in walls, electrical . . . it's never ending.
I also ripped out every landscape plant except for one lemon tree, and started over!

Nothing beats the satisfaction of working on your own home; I hope you get to experience it soon :)

@sorce, I'm still trying to figure out what is going on here. How can we have thread about anything on BNut without a picture? And, given this, how can we possibly have a thread with no responses demanding pictures?

Where are the damn pix?
At least a landscape plan.

and how on earth can we help him move unless he has filled out his location/zone information?

Buy a nice spot on Waveland Ave way out in left field....sell the naming rights to your roof but save room for a roof top bonsai garden. I'll bring a keg of old style to ur house warming.

This completely!

We are doing lots of that stuff still, not wrong when you say "never ending" either.
Some days you wonder if you have bitten off more than you can chew but there is a certain satisfaction when one thing is completed and more to the point you have done the work to your own house that you will never get doing the same work for a rented house or a client.
Must say I haven't slept so well for 30 years at the end of the days now.

Hope ya find a killer yard. When I'm looking for a place I always check to make sure there is at least one spot to have a pee without neighbours seeing!

Not that you have to pee there really but at least you know you've got somewhere to hide.

Maybe you should post all of the information about the properties that you are looking at here and we can help you with the selection process. After all what is better than a couple hundred different opinions?

and make sure you ask for opinions on soil as well. ya know - liven things up a bit

And then we just say places that we think are nice anyway regardless of the requirements laid out.

Stuff like "come to Spain, it's nice" or "I always fancied Hawaii".
Can probably dig up a few places online in no time.
