Dang Mach you set the bar pretty high! Something to strive for. Only into this a couple years now and work in progress.

Real nice Underdog! I think you have an awesome focal element in that pond that you could build a whole bonsai garden around if you wanted to. I am jealous because I wanted to have one in the middle of the garden but opted out of it since it would have been yet something else I needed to maintain. But they sure do make wonderful garden features!

Thanks. Expanding around it is the plan. Flagstone patio coming soon from bartering w/my landscape buddy. A bench/work area is next on my list. Maintenance is surprisingly low once established. I had more trouble with that little one before. Until my 2 giant maples drop all their leaves and seeds in it...

Is it Sergio ?

Bonsai has been here as long as the Chinese have been, around 1870 or so.
But mostly restricted to the Chinese.
Now becoming a growing interest.
Hobbies are a new idea to Trinidadians.

The colour pencil is my brother-in-law's [ Khaimraj - IBC ]
We had nothing to really show, so he thought it might be decent to
send you something special.
Merry Christmas

Serg, always a treat to virtually wander your garden. One day, I’ll make it up there.
How about a progression of sorts...
My second bonsai setup, when I still lived in Iowa, about 1998:

See that black rock in the center, it’s got a trident maple growing over it now!
First bonsai setup in AL, 2003ish:

Second AL house, and a better display area, 2008:

Which we later graded, added a berm and some crushed limestone to replace the grass and define the garden area, 2012:

That was the best growing area I’ve ever had, full sun exposure, fading to a shady spot, and well protected from wind. Most trees had a permanent backdrop, which made them easy to photograph without moving them. It also had a big growing bed by the hose, making it easy to attend.

The current garden displays well, but is not easy to work in, and has rough exposure, lots of wind, hard sun, and then most of it is plunged into the shadow of the house by about 4:00 PM. That’s good for D-trees, but some of my pines and junipers need to be sited to the left end for more sun exposure. To photograph them against a plain background, I’m often setting them on that little black table and taking a long shot to fill the background with fence. The irrigation system and webcam gives a lot of peace of mind when I’m not home to water. I can check in and see them getting watered, 2017:

Well thank you Ant that's very kind of your brother-in-law! He is very talented. Interesting about the Chinese. In Cuba there were also lots of Chinese immigrants. It looks like they went all over the Caribbean. But... I don't know that they brought bonsai into Cuba? I suppose they must have? I, myself am Cuban but left for Spain when I was a toddler so don't know what the bonsai scene looked like back then if any?

Merry Christmas again!

You've come a long way baby! Great to see the set up progressions. Thanks for sharing. Love the overhead shot of your current set up. Might not be your most ideal but has the most visual interest. Really nice not to say anything about your excellent trees.

You are of course welcome here anytime Bri. I suppose the progression you mention is all in the photos but the order is not really chronological.

@MACH5 That is the most beautiful set up I've ever seen. Unbelievable. You should put out a calendar!

I get that “hobbies are new” thought. In many countries...I think the most popular hobby is looking at an iPhone. That hobby seems to be growing in popularity everywhere....fortunately some of us are taking a different hobby path.

I imagine you live in an area where you’re constantly pushing back the wild growth to make room for your trees.

Mach's Garden is incredible. Wonderful trees, great layout and immaculately maintained. As wonderful as the photos are, it’s even better in person. I’ve seen it suckas!!! Very inspirational. Would make anyone want to improve their bonsai and bonsai space.

Nice idea to post a progression-type timeline of your garden! Trees just getting better and better......apparently the paycheck has improved as well!!:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
I'm still at the "hurricane fence as a backdrop" stage...;):p:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
Too bad about the "growing environment" in the new digs....but you can use the pool/hot-tub to hide the tears...hey, this is something that really affects bonsai folk!!!:D:D:D:D:D:D

Like an episode of "This is your Life".....and now, Brian....do you remember this tree....:cool::cool::D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Nice and some sweet trees!! Yes, looks like you got plenty to expand on Matt! Is your wife ok with you taking over at least a whole section of your backyard? Mine fought me for quite some time. She wanted to put a pool in instead. But now I think she saw what I did (or doing) and she loves it. Although I could have done what Lance did and had the garden built around the pool. That's why I won't show her his pics!! :p:p

I will just show her your pics and I think that should convince her ;). Actually she doesnt mind, I have been drawing up plans to expand but can't come up with an idea I am really happy with. Winter is a good time for that type of stuff...

@Tieball ,

I imagine you live in an area where you’re constantly pushing back the wild growth to make room for your trees.

Not quite sure what you mean ?

This island is small and neighbourhoods are proportioned down, not like the US [ see Matt's image ].
If you found flat land on our hills, you would be restricted to less than 5000 square feet.
Nor would you want to live on the flat land with the high water tables, 9 to 30 feet above sea
level. The humidity is really unpleasant.

So there is about 50 feet of lawn to the house and bamboo hedge all around.
Fortunately every neighbour/s house is about 50 to as much as 300 feet away from
the boundary bamboo hedge. The house is above all of the neighbours save the
ones at the back who are on a half acre of land.

The trees planted to stabilize the land have also eaten up some of the light overhead.
So the north side only gets light from 6 to 11 a.m and 3 to 6 p.m and then little from
November until the end of February [ winter ]

Is this what you were talking about ?
Good Day
Anthony
