A friend gave me this found stone about 10 years ago. Today I decided to attempt photographing it. There was some difficulty in color rendition. I tried different backgrounds to set it on. The one that seemed to work the best is this dark glass round.
The colors are fairly accurate.

Here's a different view of the stone. I carved a pocket in this slab to accept the bottom of the rock to give me more display options. Height including slab is about 12 inches.

Edit
I think that I need to do something about the color of the slab. It doesn't work very well. Probably sand it and rub in dark stain.

Nice stone....Trinity river, east of 99. West of 99 has mostly green with no reds.

Probably originally came via Ken McCloud. He has the market cornered on where these come from. So far that is all I have managed to eek out of him as far as loaction!

I did let him know that I may be able to get him into Clear Creek, which bought me some leverage.

I would love to know how these were formed and the conditions that melted these obscenly beautiful colors together.

Smoke, I love your phrase, "obscenely beautiful colors". That does tell the story. I don't know how I was lucky enough to be handed this stone.

Hold on to it Pal, and please don't ever cut it! Ken tells me that this particular type stone is very hard to find now. Green jade type material is sometimes found with red jasper, but seperate. Together in one stone is fascinating. At clear creek, I find green jade/serpentine and red jasper in the bedrock of the river, but never the two together in one stone.

I have a couple five gallon buckets of blood red jasper, gem quality. Awesome stuff. I'll dig them out and post some shots as well as some clear creek jade.

Clear creek has been closed for a number of years due to asbestos. The road is open to the farmer but not the public, but walking is possible as this does not send the fibers airborne like vehicles. Time will tell, I also have access to a guy who lets us dig C. junipers in the same areas.

For sure, I would never cut it.

This is the latest image. I didn't like the color of the slab, so I sprayed it with black lacquer.

Hey Al, would you be interested in getting together a small group for a collecting trip? I went on the GSBF trip on the Eel river and had a great time. Also hunted a few hours this summer on Cache Creek but it was 106 that day so everyone thought it best to cut it short. I am part of a small group of suiseki lovers that are an offshoot of the ABAS club in Sacramento. We are also talking to the San Francisco suiseki club about doing a joint trip in the future.
I am very interested in a suiseki hunting adventure to the Clear Creek area. I went rock hounding there many years ago (before bonsai or suiseki and before it was closed) and remember looking at that creek and thinking how I would love to come back and hunt for jadite (though I never did). The geology is very unique in that area. On that trip we went to a cinabar mine, a benitoite mine, and searched for bog agate.

Mike, you were handed this stone because you are a gem of a person, generous with your time and experience, and would appreciate its beauty. I'm glad to have met you.

...and Al, I'll have to take your word for where the stone originated. I bought it at the Alameda flea market, run on the old Alameda airstation runway.

Mike,

I think the black lacquered, wooden slab works very well with this stone. The two make a nice presentation.

Paul

Daiza

I have made over 300 daizas for Ken McLeod. Most of his daizas are mine. This is definitely one of his stones and the red is particularly rare.
This is a VERY GOOD one! The spot he collected these stones at is depleted he tells me, especially of the stones with the red!
I can make a daiza for it if you like.
