A year ago I acquired this landscape birch. Over the year I gradually pushed back its foliage to the trunk. It’s been a remarkably vigorous tree and I got 3-4 flushes of growth in the space of 5 months. A simple strategy of trimming back all branches roughly equally seems to have worked.

Going into winter I was lazy and didn’t seal the cuts with cutpaste. I found that the dieback from drying extended about an inch. I won’t recommend not sealing the cuts as the tree is refined.

This spring I repotted it, cutting back the roots quite heavily. At this point the three trunks are fused at the roots. To develop surface roots currently it is potted in a large pot with sphagnum.

It’s responded quite vigorously once again and I reckon I can start working on ramification once I’m done dealing with the long straight sections. I need the tree to bud back closer to where the branches start.

I really enjoyed working with this species: it’s vigorous, but reliable. I’ve heard of birches losing entire branches unpredictably - but that hasn’t happened yet in my limited experience.

As far as this composition goes - there is no front yet, the pot is perhaps too garish for it, and the planting angle needs work. The priority was to restrict the root system in a small flat container.

Always appreciate any constructive feedback.
