Ok! I thought it was something related to bark protection! How tight do you wire it?
Not tight. Just enough to hold the bark.

Thought maybe you'd super glued the plates. Which I've done. A little dab here and there. It’s just 1.5 mm aluminum wire to protect the bark. It flakes off easily if you accidentally rub against it. Easy to do when you’re removing wire.

You could. Depends on the tree.Thought maybe you'd super glued the plates. Which I've done. A little dab here and there.
True, but the opportunity to work on the skills associated with changing a mature tree would have been missed. Nice work and progression.Something to think about. I’m 7 years into this rehab project. It’ll be another three of four before I can show it. I wonder what i could have grown from seed in that 10 of 11 years?

IIRC, you've done got some seedlings already 3 or 4 years down the road, another 3 or 4 will tell. If not, the 6 year contest that you've entered will answer the question. I expect this tree (though quite nice ✔) will prove to be just one of the 'training wheels'. Foliage will never be where you want it, until you put it there. Its clear that you can do it anytime.Something to think about. I’m 7 years into this rehab project. It’ll be another three of four before I can show it. Ala 'Dirty Harry', the question, punk, is can you make a trunk?

I think this is the difference in starting from seed/seedlings.
It’s hard to say from the picture but could a more bunjin styling be possible?
When you get those old needles off, it will really start looking like something!Tree responded well to decandling this year with lots of summer shoots. New grafted apex is also strong. I’ll wire and cut the old apex off this year.

What you could have grown from seed in 10 or 11 years would never have that bark on it yet! Maturity takes much longer then 11 years.Something to think about. I’m 7 years into this rehab project.
