I was very sad to see that there is one measly deciduous tree in the Mirai sale. Not neccesarily that I'm looking to buy a tree, but it just reinforces the lack of deciduous champions in the industry. đŸ˜¢

No, there is a zelkova, must have missed the live oak... OK so there is 2. whoopee.

20 seconds is pretty much the length of the sale looks like, 12 minutes, and there are very few left.

That’s because they take a lot longer to create!

Bill Valavanis has been doing bonsai for 50 years. He has nice deciduous trees.

I'm fortunate enough to only live an hour from Bill. I'm at his place a few times throughout the year admiring AND looking to buy some of his deciduous trees. Especially some of his shohin deciduous trees. Unfortunately I must have a good eye and I'm always picking out some of his best deciduous trees in his collection that so far he just can't bear to part with. I always leave there a little disappointed :)

ive seen Ryan working on a fair few bits of deciduous trees on the streams, maybe every 4th stream or so, ive seen zelkova, pomegranate, field maple, tilia, beech, maple, trident in the last stream and a chinese elm a few weeks ago. some nice bits here n there, he must be waiting to get them to a good level:)

i dont see the sale being advertised on the website. if anyone has a pic of the Zelkova, do show...

@BobbyLane link here.
I would like to have access to good material, doesn't have to be "finished". Lots of the material he has isn't finished, just want to see some representation of D.

Owen does indeed. We will see about Andrew, Bjorn was supposed to be all about it, but doesn't seem as oriented that way as I had expected.
If they all make triangle deciduous trees, who wants a collection full of those?

I was just having this discussion with Scott Lee. There is more of a demand for conifers than deciduous trees. I realize the time it takes...think yamadori has influenced the decline as well?

Andrew is studying under Hagedorn who doesn't seem to be held back from breaking out of the mold, and Owen certainly has a wide range of talents that go beyond strictly traditional. I think there is a place for triangle trees too though. I find many different things attractive.

I don't think Matt Ouwinga should be omitted from the conversation when it comes to deciduous trees. Many people know him as the pot guy, but he's been supplying quality trident (among other) seedlings for the community to start building. He's got a stellar collection in his own right with many more growing out in fields for future refinement.
