Extended season starting trees indoors

4 day Zelkova Seedling Air-layer.

This one looks to be just about ready to push roots.Only 4 days.I expect roots in 2 more days.
I also did 3 more this evening.

Japanese Maples

Transplanted 30 of these.Giving a bit more light.I’m wondering if I can give some more after they settle. They should handle it nicely.Especially since room to grow and all leaves in good light. Will make seedling air-layers if they are conducive to rooting quickly like Zelkova are. They need to get more vigorous first before I proceed.

What substrate are you using? Just perlite? Any fertilizer or anything? How long do you plan on keeping the plants in there?

Yea,just perlite.Drain to waste hydroponics.
These are destined to become seedling air-layers like I did with the zelkova(though never tried maples).Soon as they are about 1/4” thick I will girdle them for better roots and grow till’ Spring and either sell or put in ground till next Spring then I may bring inside for quick development. We’ll see.
Seedlings such as this I must admit I get very technical.......I am learning, this is first attempt from a class I attended.I boost calcium,L amino acids, kelp, fulvic and humic acids....and run a very low EC(nutrient solution strength) With slightly less than adequate nitrogen and 1:1ratio with potassium so no photosynthetic energy is wasted on excessive growth.Instead the energy makes chemical reactions in leaf that help rooting considerably(mother plant theory).
Here is article and also can search his online video classes.I bought the whole set.Very interesting Dutch growing techniqes.
I use Botanicare hydro nutrients along with other sources for tech grade amino acids and stuff.

Hmm I might try a simplified version of this to grow jacaranda seedling air-layers. Since jacaranda seeds germinate so aggressively I could graft a mature scion onto a seedling rootstock to try to get the mature blooms.

making clump/multi-trunk seedling layers

I can do about 5 of these per evening.Definately got to get them done and into more open space. They look really good. Some are 15” already!

second batch of Pines starting to get vigorous

I am pleased with how these are growing.Only two months from when they were dipped in hormone!

Zelkova seedling air layer 6 days in

I bet it pushes roots tomorrow.Hopefully a lot.I’m watering with the mother plant formula.
Definately see a difference in callous mass and even the secondary callous ring up top forming with the new propagation knowledge compared with what I used to do.
Usually takes about 16 days, but this should be ready in nearly half the time!

That’s crazy looking. This is such a great thread. Thanks for sharing. I’m glad your classes are paying off so well.

Thanks, Tyro! It is fun making them....the faster the better. Now just need to figure how many I can fit on the table.I hooked up a third light today with a couple qb’s on it.

Zelkova seedling Air-layers 8 day’s.

Here it is at 8 days!
Another two and will be done.I like the fact they are getting the amino acids right from the get-go and these should grow nicely.
I make about one per/day.Have about 11 going on now.

@cmeg1 I'm pretty experienced with the dwc method of hydroponics do u think it would work for maples?

First time trying.I would like to do to the maples what I am doing to the Zelkova seedling a couple posts above.I never made a seedling air-layer from any other tree.

I had always wondered if it would work for a woody plant. So I tried and it worked for me pretty well with a ficus, but never tried an outdoor temperate woody plant like maple.

Zelkova Seedling Air-Layer......9day’s!

Alright! A personal best for me.This makes me happy.Half the time it usually takes.Roots grew much more vigorous this way.
1 qt. Rootpouch pots with bottom half a grade#3 perlite.Giving a starter formula to grow the roots for two or three weeks. They will stabilize better.
Kind of makes me want to make a tiny tree.I want to see if I can get these budding everywhere. That would be neat.
