They air layer easy and fast too, cuttings take pretty good as well. I usually air layer later in the spring but you could probably get away with it earlier in your area. As for cuttings I find I just stick them whenever as long as its before fall and they root, just not sure if the cuttings likes mid summer heat of Cali. Still, they're fun to propagate them!

Looking to propagate some black dragon cuttings and air layer off a very tall nursery stock. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
BFD
Do you have a picture of the stock?
This is not a common juniper I see used as bonsai on this forum.
Not saying it doesn't occur, just not common.
I see one in a friends landscape daily, and very...very slow growing over the last 10+ years.

Edit: here's an article @Paulpash shared several years ago in another thread...

I have no experience with Cryptomeria.
I have done Hinoki - Chamaecyparis obtusa. In late summer I just stuck cuttings I trimmed off a tree, stuck them in a pot with a peat-bark mix, and set them in about half shade, morning sun, evening shade. Just left them outside all winter, by late summer they were showing growth, a good sign they had rooted. Success rate was about 25 %. Far from commercial success, which would be better than 75%, but I used zero hormones, no "greenhouse domes" nothing at all. Just simple stick the cuttings in a pot.

I imagine for cuttings, Cryptomeria would be about the same.
I have no idea about air layers, my understanding is that it is possible.

Thanks H John, I'm planning to air layer and make cuttings. I appreciate your input. Cheers, BFDave
