Alternatives to Kaneshin watering cans?

Dear All,

I am installing a few rain barrels as the new dry summers we are getting are causing too much scale buildup from my bore hole in the pots. So I plan on doing more handwatering.

I am now looking at watering cans. As these will find a place between the trees, I prefer to not use the blue plastic-fantastic bits I already have laying about in the shed, but a proper steel or copper one.

I found these: https://kaneshin.shop2.multilingualcart.com/goods_en_jpy_428.html (currently not available, but will probably return when global supply lines are restored). I was however wondering.. Does anybody know of a place to get this design but a bit more budget-friendly? 193 USD for a watering can is a bit of an overkill perhaps?
 
I've got one from kaneshin that size. Not worth the money. Too small to be practical for watering more than one tree at a time. Also, the solder on the support tube that runs from the neck to the can cracked early on--in other words, it's not all that durable.

I got frustrated with having to fill the damn thing every two minutes when hand watering a dozen trees. I currently use an English-made gallon and a half watering can. It's easier and not so delicate. The can is similar to this one--fine rose is similar to the extremely fine rose on the Kaneshin. Look around...

I bought one of these recently. The plastic variety. I would not recommend it honestly. Functionally it works pretty well and it has a nice fine spray with a lot of water moving, but the build quality is not what I'd expect for the money. Unfinished joints, the handle attachment is flimsy as all get out and I can't see it lasting more than a couple seasons. They used to have an awesome reputation as a high quality product but it's not been my experience.
 
I'm too agressive (or clumsy maybe) for watering cannisters anyways.
I use a telescopic watering staff/wand garden hose attachment.
Or I dip my pots in the pond.

@rockm you use this exact model? Is there anyway to change out the heads to produce a softer flow?

It came with two heads. One heavier flow than the other. Never had a problem with the flow rate, in fact it was a bit slow for me since I water big pots.

FWIW, I use my Haws can primarily to apply fertilizer. I have a hand wand (Japanese-made) attachment for my garden hose. I go through them every couple of years, but they're around for $25 or little more if you look, particularly at shows. I''ve found the wands and shower heads available at Lowes and other big box hardware stores tend to be too coarse--even on the shower setting--to use. They can wash soil away on smaller trees.

I looked all over for the Haws they also seem to be sold out.

I use the Haws for hand watering, current one has been in use for five years, paint peels off in the interior first. Need to rinse the Rose out for particles from time to time. Functions well.

Prefer a wand attached to a hose for the Nursery trees!

following with interest, need a new can for aplying liquid fert every once in a wile!
 
I also bought a bigger version of this:


They come in 3 sizes, i got the second biggest... should have got the biggest... I use liquid fert in every watering, every day. It takes 4-5 cans to water everything....

I really really wish I had bought the bigger one.... If anyone finds the same, but bigger, and available in UK, please do post!
 
They are pricey but the Kaneshin should last forever. I like that you can buy replacement screens and rosettes. They do fill a lot faster if you can dip them in the pond or a big pot.

Oh and to be clear, I would never pay this money for a watering can. You realise you could buy a few or at least 1, very good piece of material that could be learnt on and experienced with, turning in to a great bonsai.. There are alternatives for a fraction of the cost.

Oh, please don’t get me wrong it’s completely to each their own. No judgements at all mate. Just cos I wouldn’t buy it doesn’t mean it’s not the Cadillac of watering cans! Lol. It’s absolutely awesome.

ive got multiple trees that are meaningless to others and get 0 interest when posted on this forum but, to quote you “it makes me happy”. Which let’s face it is by far the most important thing!!
 
And.. I do not need more trees in my yard. I do need a watering can. Or.. I would really like something else than the 7E plastic fantastic I have now, if it is going to be used regularly. Guess I did not NEED a custom build pot either. But then again.. :)

Bonsai is pretty much the only thing I spend my money on which is just for me. But.. As in the first post. Even I find this a little over the top..
