Nigel saunders bonsai zone [unpopular opinion]

I watch Nigels videos quite a bit. Hes a successful youtuber because its very clear that he absolutely loves what he does and that growing bonsai are his passion. People are drawn to ones that have that energy about them. Although he has a different take on bonsai then many, that doesn't make him wrong. Yes he has "bonsai" that of aloe vera, a species that most would say is ridiculous. Yes he uses clip and grow instead of wiring his trees. But the point is he loves what he does. And if you had as many trees as he does, I bet you'd be falling behind too. Bonsai is an art form and as such, each artist has his freedom to express him or herself the way they want to through their art. I personally love the natural look he has achieved with no wire. Of course art is also free to be critiqued, however I am a big believer that, if your work isn't better then the one you're heavily critiquing, I say the proof is in the pudding.

Always enjoy Nigel’s shorter videos. Some stuff he does isn’t my bag but that’s ok. I live in Florida and am not at all into tropicals. Nigel’s in the great white north and loves tropicals. I enjoy the hell out of Aussie bonsai bloke too. That guys great on camera. The word hate really shouldn’t be used so willy nilly. Then to call the man a fraud or fake on top of the hatred is really a bit to far.

That’s what you’re MEANT to think...

The consensus, at least the last time I was in Belize, talking to the Jamaican workforce behind the tourism industry.. is still pretty “split”.. it depends when you where born.. at least how the song is TAKEN...

It WAS “Pass the Kutchie (Cigarette with Tobacco/MJ)... it BECAME “Pass the Dutchie (the traditional cooking pot you mentioned)” as a RADIO edit.. but THEEEEN “Dutchie” was how it expanded in the popular culture.. representing the poverty and food shortages of the times...

So.. depending on how you view time... As a Tralfamadorian, myself...

BOTH are correct... sort of.

🤣🤣
Well, I've learned something today ;-). In 1981 we've had a hitsong here, 'nederwiet' by 'Doe Maar', it was basically a crash course growing pot in your back garden. 'This song is about cannabis sativa hollandica, a.k.a. nederwiet. We start out with the seed, you put the quality seed in the ground in march, april or may. Don't bother with pre-sprouting, the little rascal knows best when to start growing'....and so on. A bit more straight to the point. Anyway. I enjoy Nigel, returning back to the topic.

also, OP's gripe is with YouTube, as if it's YouTube has producers and showrunners selecting content and pushing it to the front of a search engine. PLEASE. YouTube Algorithms are designed to 1. show you the most popular content related to keywords you searched. Following that YouTube algorithm suggests more and more fringe content from your original search to keep you watching. Nigel is successful on an open platform like YouTube because he is more like a Bob Ross than a Mozart. He's accessible, he's kind. Peter Chen is similar. However, Nigel definitely isn't THE most popular youtube bonsai channel..... By subscriber count alone, Bonsai Empire and Peter Chen both have more subscribers. And when i search bonsai in youtube, I get a LOT of Mirai videos, because I've watched a lot of Mirai......IF OP has watched ALL of Nigels videos, YouTube assumes he likes it and keeps offerring them.

OP doesn't understand YouTube and doesn't understand why people like Nigel are necessary to the furtherment of their Artform even if they aren't world-class, winning the kokofu every year - good.

The op grinds my gears (sorry Peter griffin) when he breaks out the h word and calls Nigel a fake. I am sure the whole YouTube algorithm thing is beyond the op anyway.

I dont watch Nigels non tree videos. I love his tree videos. Hes clear. Describes what he's doing, why. He definitely loves his trees and has a lot of older trees. He is more inspired by the penjing tradition, than bonsai tradition, so dont expect the same styling techniques.

Thats all ive ever heard it called. “Hot boxing”

I always thought a “dutch oven” was when you farted in bed and put the covers over your wife/husband/other’s head. Other than the actual cooking device dutch ov
we used to call it a fishbowl as well. and if you opened a door or window good chance youd be omitted next session. people took that seal serious and dont forget, ironically

Nigel teaches beginners a lot of bad and counterproductive habits, particularly overly aggressive root pruning. His trees develop at a snail's pace because of this. This tree is 17 years old! Wut!

I agree that there are a few of his trees that after hearing how old they are im like "Uh what? Thats it?" However I also understand why he sometimes goes overboard, all in all I like the way he goes about things because he is also teaching to be content with what you make and your accomplishments. I like the positivity he brings, but yea some things are obviously underdeveloped because of things hes done in the past that were more extreme then needed to be.

And if he lives another 20 years, I know alot of his trees will have beautiful radial root bases :)

I never cared for it because we used to smoke blunts, and you would absolutely reek of weed and tobacco after.
