Golden State Bonsai Federation Convention 2009

Al & Si, thanks for adding these pitures... I think it is a very interesting tree with great movement and elegancy. Maybe the foliage is a bit too dense now, but nevertheless a tree with great potential. Wish I could see IRL... Thanks, Hans

Golden State Bonsai Federation Convention 2009

Very nice exhibit. My compliments to the GSBF... When I was looking at the pictures, I saw a striking tree that drew my attention because of the beautiful movement and dead wood. But I didn't found a complete picture of this tree. Can anyone tell me more about this tree? Has anyone a good...

    Greetings from Belgium

Hi folks, Just wanted to say that the Belgian website BonsaiCafé has an English spoken part on it's forum, called BonsaiCafé International, especially created for our international guests. Since the registration form of the forum is only available in Dutch language, I would like to announce...

    Flight of the Heron

Here's a picture with foliage.. Looks a bit like grass. I know there is also a variagated foliage, and one with an white edge. But I haven't found these yet. The bulbs are small, so I think of using a small pot, or plant several of them in a bigger pot top have a maximum effect...

    Flight of the Heron

Early this year I was able to buy me some Habenaria radiata or White Egret flowers (as bulbs). These are terrestial orchids originally coming from Japan. I planted them in a mix of akadama, grit and some orchid-soil I bought in a garden center. Early summer the foliage appeared, and the two last...

    Black & White photography

Of course you can lose important information by making B & W pictures. Color means a lot in bonsai photography. But I bet you can make damn good pictures too with only these two colors. And make something old look even older. Or give a particular setup something extra. I am sure it can work...

    My accents

On the bloodgrass I agree with removing some of the blades that aren't in line, but my aim is to get it as full as possible. It should look like blazing fire in this nice pot of Dan, with the flames going straigth upwards. Yet I understand your point of minimalism, Will... I have the same...

    Bunjin Potentilla

I doubted for a long time if I would post this over here. It is naturally not a bonsai, but rather an experimenting. At least, that's how I look at it. And I am also a bit curious what your opinion is concerning this... thing. I have dug out this potentilla some years ago form a neighbour's...

    My accents

Here some pictures of my accent plantings. Hope you enjoy them.. First one is Japanese blood grass (Imperata cylindra "Red Baron") in a Dan Barton pot. Second one Japanese forest grass ( Hakonechloa macra "Aureola") in an unknown pot. Third one is Leptinella potentillina mixed with...

    Black & White photography

This is what I mean. If you take away the colors, you take away something important in bonsai. The color of pot, or fresh green needles, cracked gnarly bark are beautiful to look at. But by using B & W photography you add some old looking patina to it. It looks older for some reason. Maybe...

    Black & White photography

When looking at professional photographs, I noticed there are beautiful black & white pictures. Or sepia, making the picture look very old. I almost never saw this with bonsai pictures, unless reading very old books or magazines. Nobody ever experimented with B & W or sepia photography, or is it...

    Wide Taxus

I worked on this Taxus today. Not the most stunning starting material, but we have to keep practising, isn't it? It's coming from a car-parking hedge. Many people have stepped on it, and walked over it. It was a shortcut to the village. So I helped out those people by digging it out. (This...

    Interesting ukibori example

Last year I mailed Mr Schneider for the prices of his art. I still have that mail, and this was his answer.. The price of my carvings are not so small as the size of them. The price range for my netsukes is from 5500 USD - 10000 USD. The snake okimonos on my site are a little bit more...

    Scots Pine

Hi Mom, Here's what I am thinking about it... I want to jin, or maybe completely remove the two stumps behind the bend. The counterweight branch is almost perfectly placed, and I believe this tree stands or falls with this branch. About the other branches I am not so sure for the moment...

    Scots Pine

Here's a Scots pine yamadori I have bought from a collector, waiting for it's first styling... About 15 inch high. The nebari measures 4,7 inch on the surface. I love the bend in the trunk, and the old looking bark. A disadvantage is the pretty straigth trunk behind the bend. But I am...

    Common Juniper

Thanks for the positive reactions. This tree is doing well. Lots of new growth, and not one branch letting me down. I hope to repot it this autumn, if I find a matching pot. If not, it will be a training pot, or maybe the same pot. Because I don't like the soil it's in now. I think much...
