Here is what I have been doing. I take an animal feed bin and drill big holes around the sides at the bottom. It allows roots to escape and grow bigger. I cut them each when I work the trees. I also drill small holes in the bottom. I them place them in the ground. I get allot more growth...

    Dawn redwood nursery find?

For the tops you can force growth with cut backs. The trees constantly seem to grow new shoots all over the trunk and branches when worked. 2 trees I cut back earlier in the year. One gave me a nice new top on the old 45 cut. Other tree opted to do the same but really late in the year. It...

    Dawn redwood nursery find?

Really fun tree to work with cause they grow fast. It's the pots and how the nurserys grow them. I use rubber animal feed bins I drill. The large holes in the sides let roots escape each year helps. I also start from cuttings so I don't have to fight what the nurserys have done. I have mulch...

Help with removing bracket/shelf fungus on trunks

Super glue even the really thin stuff I don't think works as well as a stabilizer. Some of the wood stabilizers stuff is super thin and soaks in. I know it doesn't go that deep if the wood is fairly solid. For knife handles we use stabilized wood that is done in a vacuum to get all the way...

Help with removing bracket/shelf fungus on trunks

So mushrooms feed on certain portions of the tree that are dead. It shouldn't kill your tree but it will deteriorate the dead wood excel-rating the rotting of it. Allot of them like sap wood since it often contains some sugars still and isn't as dense. For the mushroom to fruit 3 things have...

Help with removing bracket/shelf fungus on trunks

Well torching wont prevent it from coming back that just affects the surface. The mushroom you see is just the larger organism fruiting essentially. Look up mushroom life cycle. What you see is supported by the Mycelium that will have spread through the dead wood. You will want to stablize...

    Wrong moss for air layering

I use Sphagum Moss shredded fine which is different that peat moss mixed with Coconut Coir. Some people use bonsai soil I have tried it and have less success. I shred the moss so I can wash most of it out of the roots before planting. If you don't shred it I find you are stuck with a moss ball...

looks grafted just below that line or its the picture tricking me. Base may be a slower growing variety since it is thinner than the top. Most time you see the graft reversed and the base is the faster growing variety.

I like Waterproof elmers glue. Drys clear looks natural and bark will grow right over it. Basically just seals the dead wood.

How much die back should I expect for crepe myrtle?

Wait and see those cuts will have a good bit of die back based on the large crepe myrtle I have. If you cut more now the chance is it will die back farther than you want. As it is that top left may die back in a way that will make work. Next time might want to leave the left larger branch 3...

Anyone got a recommendation for Giga on the root chop the plants will need? Do them now or replant in good media and do a year from now. dawn redwood--where to go?

As a data point. I use the cut paste that is like soft rubber. My water is set up so it never hits the trunk other than at the very base possibly. I do have it set to water them twice a day. Only thing that seems to hurt these trees is drying out.
