2021 Challenge?

afaik, imported like corn and potatoes?

Upon further research, yes, 100% endemic to the Americas.
I think I'll save the debate over native vs imported for later. Peppers are surprisingly more complex than I anticipated, and surprisingly fun to research.

I subscribe to post #128 rules. I will be entering several Mulberries dug this year (some in spring and some in fall) and if one lives it will be updated next autumn as The One.

So.. How about a bund of trunks I have in a growbed right now; I do nto have options to wild-collect..?
What if you have already worked on the roots of these trunks and they have been growing there for a couple of years ... wouldn't you have a huge advantage over someone who buys a new plant at a nursery? It will sure give you a head start

Absolutely. And @MACH5 has so much experience that he has an advantage. And @Clicio being in the tropics has much better growing conditions..

Point is: I do not enter unless I can use something that is in the pipeline anyway. I am not going to go out and buy more trees as I have a field full of them, and I have trees sitting in the grass as my benches are full. And knowing some other people that do bonsai, I can imagine there are more people here that do.

To me, these contests are a way to see what can be done with trees and pushing the contestants to bring the best of their work to the table. In the end, everybody learns from the work of others, but, more importantly, from trying their hardest to get somewhere with a specific piece of material. With the contest setup we have a starting year, and ending year and annual or more frequent updates.

If we are concerned about who follows the rules and what not, I think we are on the wrong track here. Unless there are big monetary prices involved, it is all for shits and giggles; let's have some fun.

Just adding to the fun. We are approaching nursery tree sale season. I've got my eye on a few cedar elms at a local nursery that will likely soon drop in price.

Higher participation rates = more users learning about native species to use (or not use) for bonsai = win.

And to offset the fact that some people may have access to older material, we can always have some kind of sub-award / honorable mention for most improved - first picture to last.

I like the bad tree suggestion. With your entry you could post the thread or website or book page that says that the species you chose is bad for bonsai.
I see that setting ones up for disappointment in their progress. There typically reasons why specific trees aren't the best candidate for our hobby. There are reasons for it. I can't see setting one up for failure or encouraging that thought process. If one willingly chooses to do so. Is one thing. But to encourage it...I'm not on board with that. We want to encourage ones to succeed in this hobby of ours. Not find frustrations that forced upon them.

I would never suggest someone just starting out to do that kind of contest. But for people who already have several (or way more) trees it could be fun to test preconceived notions about certain trees. At any rate it seems everyone is all in on the native tree challenge so I’ll let someone else take up the mantle about any other fun challenges.

Also I’ll be posting the official thread today :)

The official thread has been started! Please indicate there if you plan on participating!

Yes. Previously worked trees would be excluded.

This sounds fun 😊 I have this field maple raw material, purchased a few months ago, no work done to it. Would it be OK to enter with this?

I'm in. I have an ironwood tree I was planning to start training this spring. Wild-collected three years ago and left to grow untrained in a large pot.

If you click on Forums at the top of the page, then find Contests, there's a very short list there, and the active/official thread for The Native Tree Challenge will be one of them.
No real issues posting here, but there's plenty more happening in the new one that you've missed.
