A raintree at 52 degrees North

straange.. the whol summer this plant did nothing. brought it inside for winter. it dropped its leaves and was bare for a bit. and now.. in 3 days it does this. seems to take the change to northern hemisphere hard..

this tree is really taking the piss out of tropical tree care. had a tropical summer with long days and it almost died. inside now.. positively glowing with growth, pretending it never was outside in the first place! guess I will bring out a bit of wire and get a leader to the ceiling

So far mine is doing OK sitting next to a SW facing patio door on a side porch. It shed a few older leaflets at first but now seems to have stabilized and is must coasting. I don’t really expect any new growth inside, especially since it is not really hot enough out there and is not getting the intense 8 or so hours of sunlight it gets in the summer outside. I have looked at LED grow lights but the ambient light seems to be enough to get it through the winter and in less than a week the days will start to get longer again. Has anyoone resorted to placing them on a heating pad in winter?

But... You are about 1000 miles further south than me. Daylength here is now ~7:45 (Today sunrise at 08:43. Sunset at16:26). Raleigh has about 9:45 hours of daylength now. Which we will not see for another 7 weeks (And have not seen for a good 6 weeks). Which is why I was so surprised to see the raintree start to grow in the darkest period of the year.

Mine sit on top of the heating.

I suspect your bottom heat plus those LED lights you show in the photo make a big difference. Bottom heat keeps those roots nice and toasty warm. The thing to watch for is if any of the new growth gets etiolated or “leggy”. That happens due to inadequate light. So far I don’t have any new growth so I’ll be watching for it.

BRT is looking great indeed (I guess it still thinks it is living in Brazil and summer is around the corner!), but I guess the Jaboticaba is not feeling well in this European winter...

Nice to see that even in my dark corner of the world I do get ramification on the branches after a good mid-winter cutback. I have however added a growlight for 3 hours additional daytime.

A little baby growing out:

And 3 seedlings in one pot for easier moving them around are now just a little jungle full of branches to choose from when trimming come summer:

Thx @Clicio for helping me find a suitable seller!

Mine continues to drop older leaflets now and then but for the most part still looks to be in good shape, although no new growth. Next year I think I‘ll try the heat mat and LED lights. For the coming week we are looking at daytime highs in the low 60sF here so I may move it outside occasionally.

You're very fortunate to be able to travel to Brazil and actually bring back a home grown BRT.
I'll be watching with interest!

What was it like bringing it back with you? Any hiccups despite having the documentation in order?

That picture of the 3 seedlings, I can’t see the wood for the trees! Jungle jungle.
