Two suggestions:

1. Rethink the planting angle.

2. Get rid of the twin spikes, preferably the smaller one.

I like the spikes, but I agree with the planting angle and it's hard to see it with 2d image. Is this a tanuki?

We need to see all sides of the tree to help you.

General comment:

It's best if we can see the lifeline coming out of the soil. Can't see it at all in the picture.

Needs a lot more foliage to set off deadwood. If your foliage is the kind of California that's course, consider grafting a dense shimpaku.

Graft some Shimpaku on this thing to give it some green, and let it fill in...
