Air layering a cherry tree

Would it be ok to air layer a cherry tree now (Aug 5/zone 6b), or wait until spring? Thanks.

You could probably get away with it although most will recommend trying it much earlier in the season. Is it something that you will be upset about losing? If not, give it a shot!

Will the air layer withstand freezing? If not, then it will have to be spring.

With warmer weather here, I'm thinking about this cherry again. Should I wait until leaves are hardened before air layering, or can I start any time now?
