Anyone With Birds Nest Spruce?

I suppose repot early spring next year but I could do some light styling in the fall?

I would pick one or the other. Either style in the fall OR repot in the spring. These two got no work in the fall of 2021, and a big repot in the spring of 2022. The browning needles were from being shaded out at the previous potting angle, the tree is growing just fine.

Although I really don't like paying full price for anything, these are fun little trees and if you find one with a nice looking frame that you can work with, I'd say there are many worse ways to spend $23.

My issue is I killed the last one during summer. Just gets really hot here. So was hoping for the smaller, and cheaper, one to try to not kill this summer

I recently repotted one from nursery stock. The roots surprised me allowing a big angle change and totally changed what styling i thought i was going to do. Glad I didn't style first. Gonna let recover 1yr as the root work might decide what branches it wants to keep.

Plenty of little budlets on this one but I’m still waiting for it to wake up. Spring can really drag up here. The plus side is you get a somewhat elongated potting season.

My birds nest spruces dried out in my heated cold frame when the thermostat conked out. Got blasted with heat for a day which caused it to die back considerably. I’m hoping heavy feeding and care can fill some of the bare branches out.

Hey, less is more yeah!?

I'm not saying don't keep a heated cold frame, I'm just saying when it becomes full, don't be afraid to leave the spruce out in the icewater!

If I could get that knee out of my groin I may have enough health this year to cut it back hard in summer and pop some buds down at Grimmy's house, I mean them branches!

Mine dropped nearly all its needles. The classic result of doing too much to it all at once. It was a bargain big box store tree so I wasn’t much concerned with it (until I discovered it had a rather nicely tapered trunk). On the plus side, when I pruned it I was very conscientious about cutting back to buds and all those buds are now bursting with new green. That said, I wouldn’t worry to much about some drying or needle drop as long as plenty of buds are present on the branches. Also what @sorce said… these BN spruces are very winter hardy.

No it’s not verified active throughout the pot. Don’t really want to disturb it unless you think it’s necessary. All the spruces were stood on my drive on paving bricks over the winter and this is the only tree that has shown both the top growth and the fungus. The attached pic shows the difference in foliage between three of the trees. The two on the left have plenty of bud but it’s a long way off coming out. The fungus tree on the right has no new budding and looks like it came out months ago.

Same three trees nearly four months later. The tree on the right looked healthier previously but now seems to be less so. The weakest tree four months ago now looks to be the greenest of the three. Is there likely to be a problem here or just old needles browning on the right tree. The foliage is very congested.
Any ideas?
