I've also wondered this. I know he stayed with a friend for the early part of his study in Japan until he was set up with Mr. Kimura but having the freedom to travel rather than work must have taken some assistance. He's been working seemingly tirelessly since his return but that land and the structure are surely a huge chunk of coin.
