Azalea beast

Good to have friends in the landscaping biz.
Thing is a beast! Been craving a big tree. I just hope to keep it alive over winter.
I think planting it in the ground would be best for now?
Work it into a large box this spring. I'm excited.

Awesome! Myself I would put it in the ground this time of year, box it up early Spring but that is me. Interested to see what others think as it varies a lot by region.

I agree, but I'm newish. We've already have a few below freezing nights and I'm leaving for a week soon. Already have a hole for it dug.

I'd put it in the ground in a protected area to overwinter, then re-collect next spring to wash the roots and get into better soil. Good trunk on that one, good luck with it.

Done. Buried deeper after the picture. Over 4 inch trunk with more under the soil. Cumon Spring!

Should be fine. Make sure you cover the roots good after the water soaks in for the Winter.

Make sure you planted it at the same level it was at before being dug, or even a bit more shallow. Planting too deeply will potentially compromise the roots.

Thanks for all the tips. Done em all Don't know about flowers what foliage he left me appears even smaller than my White Cascade Az. Has some flower buds left on it to see.
Even better than a nice find as it was a surprise delivery!
Had a broken branch I removed and sealed. Could I remove a couple more inward growing ones I know I won't be using? Or wait until when? Had enuff trauma for one year I suppose...

And even nicer coffee cup! These old Hardee's cups are my favorite coffee cup ever! I have been using one everyday YEARS!
Buy them every chance I get.

Im gonna guess it's the lavender/purple looking color. Those are about the only ones that grow that large.

I think i would cut back those straight trunks back down to the rely red part. Seal the cuts for sure. You aren't gaining anything by keeping them

I'm thinking I need to wait for signs of life this spring before I dig this up and box it?
I've been very aggressive with Rhode and azalea roots in the past, how hard do you think I can hit these?
The root ball is about 18 in dia.
Thanks for any advice. I have high hopes for this one.

I'd wait...
But I'm getting more and more cautious with azaleas ...
I have 3, all of which were cut back hard top and bottom.
The other 6 to 8 that I've had all seemed like they were recovering from the same treatment, throwing out shoots all over, but then they suddenly went belly up....

So in the future when I try another one, I'm goin sloooow.
