Hi all,

I'm wondering if someone who is familiar with beni chidori color can tell me if these pictures look consistent with what they have seen. I purchased two small beni chidori maples last summer from a trusted bonsai nursery. This spring, one of them came out with more of a pale green/yellow color than I was expecting. The other is definitely very pink.

I know color can vary from year to year, and they are from the same batch so maybe this is normal. Is there reason to think either one was mislabeled?

Thanks!

These are beni chidori cuttings from the same parent plant, treated the same way under the ‘exact’ same conditions

Right now, no. In 3-5 years when things have stabilized, post a pictute of new growth, mid-spring, and hardened off leaves.

When Japanese maples are young and small, color can vary significantly from individual to individual - even clones planted in the same soil and grown next to each other in the same conditions. Once they get larger, their roots develop, and the trees become more "middle-aged", the variability declines significantly.

@Canada Bonsai & @Bonsai Nut Thank you both for your reply. The difference between the two is what made me question if one was mislabeled, but its good to hear that that is normal for a young maple.

@Canada Bonsai seeing those definitely eases my concern with them. I actually think the nursery in New England that I purchased these from may have came from you. You're the only one around that I know of that sells wired cuttings of Beni Chidori, so it seems likely!

They are beautiful in spring, that is for sure!

Thanks,
Mike
