Tried to air layer a bloodgood in our front yard in a few places. Cut them in and wrapped them in sphagnum moss around beginning of April. Checked them today 8/17 and found the calluses seemed to have bridged the girdle is this a failed attempt??

they did bridge, it appears you did not scarpe the surface clean of cambium after removing the bark, Make a fresh cut on the bottom edge of the callus and also apply a wire tourniquets below the fresh cut. Be sure to scrape the cut area clear of cambium before reapplying the damp sphagnum and enclosure, Check them in the late spring/early summer.
If winter comes early in your next of the woods, wait until spring to retry, they have bridge for now so waiting will not incur additional risk during the winter.
