This thread is for questions / comments / discussion related to the Dallas Bonsai Photo Text Contest. As a reminder, here are the rules:

Bonsai Photo Text Contest

We don't want to just see your favorite bonsai, we want to know where it has been. This month we are asking you submit a photo of your most successful bonsai, accompanied with a short text describing the trees history (~300 words).

* Describe the tree

* Where and when was it acquired

* How long has the tree been in your possession?

* Who has worked on the tree with you?

* What are your plans for the tree?

Requirements:

* Tree must have been in your posession over 2 years or collected.

* You must own the bonsai and all rights to images you submit.

* Artists: Open category. Beginners: Under 3 Years experience.

* Up to 3 entries per person

* Provide an accompanying description of the bonsai.

* Advanced Photoshop modification is not allowed. You are allowed to make general image touchups including: Cropping, hue/saturation, levels, background cleaning, and removal of dirt/dust. You cannot manipulate your plants structure or form in any way with image editing.

* Entry period is from today through August 9. Entries must be posted to the site no later than 11:59 PM PST on August 9.

* Winners announced August 16.

Judging:

* We are not judging your photography techniques, but your photos should be clear and accurately depict your tree.

* We want to know your bonsais history and your involvement in it's styling.

* Dallas Bonsai will judge all entries.

* Professional artists not entering the contest may volunteer.

Artist Entries:

* 5 Photo Maximum

Beginner Entries:

* 2 Photo Maximum

Prizes & Categories:

Best Overall Bonsai ($100)

Best Artists bonsai (First Prize: $20, Second: $10)

Best Beginners bonsai (First: $20, Second: $10)

Seems like all the description provided are for beginners. Or are there other categories implied but not mentioned? Only reason I thought so is because of the multiple prizes.

"* Tree must have been in your posession over 2 years or collected."
Collected trees are exempt and do not have to be in possession for 2 years?

As written (and as I interpret it), anyone who is in it less than 2 years (like me) are not eligible. Leaving the beginner arena for really just the 3 year newbies. I have no problem with that if that is really the intent.

Please clarify. Thank you.

I just clarified the rules. There are two categories:

"Artists" are an open category with 5 photo limit but no other restrictions.

"Beginners" are for people new to bonsai (under 3 years) who are limited to two photos. Since their trees are "beginner" trees they should have been in their possession less than three years.

To me, 3 years seems a bit early to make the cutoff for beginners. I've just passed the 3 year point and I'm still learning how to keep trees healthy in bonsai soil/pots. And styling...let's just say that's a work in progress.

I know the cutoff is arbitrary and wherever it is placed, someone will be unhappy. Just figured I'd share my thoughts.

Chris

P.S. Aren't the "new talent competitions" usually limited to those with something like 10 years of experience?

UMMM.... I am thinking this thread desperately needs a bump, seeing that only one
person has entered ??? And it ends on the 9th right ???

There was like 10 pages of discussion and only one person has entered...

where are my entries?

I posted 3 entries into this contest on the other thread yesterday, and still do not see them posted... I know that it's a moderated thread, but hope that the time sent is accepted instead of the time posted.

Yep... and I posted 2 entries yesterday...
11:59 PST is 3 o'clock in the morning my time and by then I was
busy snoring with dreams of Bonsai dancing in my head...
:(

The little one is pretty cute in person as well. I was joking. They are two different trees of mine.

Wheew !!! Man glad to see others entered this contest as well !!!
Hard to have a contest with just 2 people !!!
Unless of course it an arm wrestling contest .

Good Luck everyone who entered !!!
:)

I didn't really enter my trees in there for any other reason than having the experience of putting something out there. I've always shied away from competition, but several people here have said that it is one way to push ahead. I can say that it made me look at my trees with a more critical eye, and really see the flaws, and what needs to change. So looking at it that way, I can see their point. Maybe someday, a show that's not virtual.....;)

Why didn't more people enter? I know that there is more people with trees on this forum. At least I thought so.

This should have gotten bumped a few Times. I never saw it until the day before it was over.

Ummmm... Hello, anyone see any results announced on Aug. 16th ???

Seeing that it is the 18th ???
Perhaps the results of this contest could be announced ???
Out of respect for those who entered...
:rolleyes:

I never even saw this. Shame, I would've put something in...

Heck I can't even find where people submitted their trees :rolleyes:

The only way something like this will work is if the administration puts a sticky on the subject and pushes it themselves.

Hey everyone, I will be announcing winners tomorrow. I know a lot of people did not see this contest, in the future we will provide the prizes and try to get a sticky in a more prominent forum.
