Bunzan Pots

Frankly, I don't like most Bunzan pots.
Pretty sure that was what I said just before I found one I had to have. when we were building our last house, my wife and I walked into the cabinet showroom, and saw a white cabinet with (we learned later) a mocha glaze. Immediately our reaction was, “woah, definitely not that”. Naturally after walking the showroom, we came back to the white/mocha glazed and had to have them. Sometimes It seems like the initial visceral response isn’t always interpreted correctly.🥴

This is said to be an earlier output of his work. I like it a lot, it’s just very small. I like the imperfections in the glaze and color. I have a little willow leaf ficus I’m working on that should go well with it in a couple of years.

I have a couple others but with kusamono in them.

I have 2. One from Matt O and one from Wigert's, too dark to go take a picture. I think I am most attracted to the crackle glaze.

When I got my BFA a long time ago I remember learning that a lot of people who say "my two year old can paint better than Picasso' or something to that affect, or just plain 'I don't like his work' is an example of ignorance and not understanding something. The more someone understands or studies an artist or art movement and the more they understand it, the more likely they are to 'like it'.

I find this is true and often a true appreciation of an artists work comes after intensive study. I happen to like Bunzan's work quite a lot but yes, much of it looks like candy dishes. He was so prolific that it's easy to only see that, but when you edit his work it's quite extraordinary. I have none of his work and am waiting for the one I have to have!
