I had the chance to get these two hawthorn's today with a fairly good price from a distant vendor. But since cargo does not accept trees with 2 meters height, the vendor had the chop them. He says that he is 100 percent sure they will survive, but I am worried (and feel guilty for being greedy to let him do that in summer) . Am I correct to worry about that? Is there anything I can do at the moment to increase their chance of survival? (After slip potting and closing the wounds with cut paste of course)

I would seal those big wounds ASAP and keep them in shade till they recover as well. Don't slip pot them. Leave the roots alone, they'll be fine, duct tape will probably work to hold the pot together for now, or take it out of the pot and wrap tight with burlap.

Nothing will happen to them. Timing is OK. If roots are OK, they will have half-meter shoots by the end of the summer.

Leave them in these pots. Give them a small dose of fertilizer, met carefull with watering and they will not skip a beat from this. You should have balls of green by the end of summer, and will be complaining about having too many branches to choose from.

Thank you very much, it is a relief to read that. Actually there was a third one on sale with a good movement. I'll be ordering that as well, before it is sold to someone else🤣😏
