I swear this thing gets bigger every day 😁
Prepping for arrival, I may have found a pot to use, Do you think this painted pot would get to hot? Is that Pumice and lava rock soil you used? Kind of hard to tell from the picture.

I used 50/50 lava and pumice. It’s a light color so I think it will be ok.

How often are you watering? I don't think that mix don't hold enough water for a JBP, but may be ok in your area. This is one of the reasons Curtis have such great success, rockwool holds a lot of water, but also allows for a lot of air to come in once the excess water evacuates the block. Even Ryan Neil recommends a 2:1:1 akadama-lava-pumice for JBP instead of the 1:1:1 he advises for other conifers.

So far it’s holding moisture well. I water once a day. The rock wool cube is still intact so that’s helping hold moisture too.

That would be great for a developed tree, but a JBP grown for caliper (development) wouldn't need that much akadama, right?

you don't use akadama for a tree that is in development. For that Ryan recommends 70% organic and 30% aggregate. But, I am using a 2:1:1 mix of Bonsai Jack Monto Clay and Bonsai Block/pumice/lava . Bonsai Jack Monto Clay and Bonsai Block hold more water than pumice and lava so I use equal parts of them in replacement for akadama.

I know a lot of people here that use a 1:1:1 with great success, so by no means mine is perfect or the best... just what I use. Also, all my JBP are in development wither in pond baskets or Rootpouch... I don't have anything that warrant the use of a bonsai pot yet, that will happen once I need to start slowing down the growth.

Also later on —-JAPANESE RED PINE—un-cut seedling
.
—-JAPANESE BLACK PINE un-cut seedlings.
—-Japanese Black Pine —seedling cuttings.

ALL CO2 GROWN AND THEN SET OUTSIDE TO MATURE INTO LATE AUTUMN!!!
Should all be very healthy!!!
Thanks!

What's the difference between un-cut seedlings & seedling cuttings? Is one better than the other?

Looking forward to grabbing a couple of these when they're available!

The uncut seedlings seem to grow better out of the gate and quicker…… Cuttings will be virtually no visible trunk and very abundant rooting with swelling root bases overtime.

The non cuttings can have very great nebari…eapecially since starting by air pruning in a 1.5-2” stonewool block..( common sense would tell).

the cuttings can make almost a clump form……

here are the two forms……the cuttings are very branched and many times right from the roots practically……..Recently I have taken a liking to the regular seedlings……In their second season there is immense budding from lower on the trunk and if you can sprout the seed with virtually no stem lengthening,it resembles a cutting in many ways……saves alot of work too!

——seedling is first 2 pics( 2nd season).
——Cutting in second two pics ( first season).

LOTS OF JBP SEEDLINGS FOR AUTUMN

Moving everything into the sunshine today.
These JBP seedlings are 12 weeks old!
They are very nice and branched ,most of them.
They will be quite full by Autumn time…seems they really pop into some fast growing when they are brought outdoors in the first week of August from the co2 fertlization.

I will have these year round and can also lower the price tag since the outdoor grow structure will provide the means and the ease for larger quantity and automation.

Anyways the seedlings are quite nice ……for some reason they grow quicker than seedling cuttings and are just a joy to make.
I will also have some cuttings in the autumn.

it would be great to have red Pines for the autumn but I just don’t know they will be hardy enough although I might be able to bring them outside and ready them up for winter sale or grow the entire winter for some pretty hefty red pines in the spring we’ll see about that…….. They are growing currently and look quite healthy…….albeit very early stage growth.

Here are the Japanese black pine seedlings I brought out today….they are fantastic.I am truly amazed by the branching and the density for only a three month old Pine seedling.
They still have some great growing the rest of this season and will bulk up big time!!!
When they’re brought out in early August from the CO2 they really flourish quite quickly…….. not sure its the heat, the solar cycle or what …….but it’s very noticable and They will get very hardy… naturally and will survive a freeze absolutely fantastic.
Last year these blocks were frozen solid all winter without any root loss and then I had 19 inch candles in Spring!!!!

SALE STARTING TOMORROW!!

Rather affordable young JBP seedlings. These are non-cutting,although the roots air-prune naturally in the bottom of the small 1.5” cube.

Will get more pictures in the morning in the daylight. Here are pictures a couple days ago.

@cmeg1 How would you overwinter these? (I’m 6b.) Temporarily slip pot them?

@cmeg1 How would you overwinter these? (I’m 6b.) Temporarily slip pot them?
Do not slip pot till’ very early Summer and the trunk will swell very nicely in the stonewool and air-prune first……then up-pot.
Keep in the mini-block for now.Let them take some very light frost and these are so small that setting in an igloo box at night when below freezing and then setting outside during day….even if morning is just below freezing slightly can bring out of the igloo box.
Then return to box at night……..
Do this so they fully harden in the Autumn sunshine until as late as possible………..do this all Winter…………till’ extremely cold and then can stay in the box in total darkness…..under porch or in a cold garage.

Do not let the box get above 35° if it is kept in darkness and also the Stonewall blocks are fine completely frozen during storage…..last year my grodan stonewool blocks were solid blocks of ice and I still had 18 inch candles on the pine trees the following spring…….mine never froze below 25f and were in a box in the ground treated the same way I explained to you with an igloo cooler.

Always in shade…the box.
Let rain and some snow during the day and when very cold like just above freezing and the box is open make sure to keep in total shade as the sun would only bring the temps unnesessarily up & down.4C7AB0D2-24AF-427A-89FD-9D8879930177.jpeg176BA548-34A1-431E-A173-3D53D3AA36EA.jpeg04DADFC1-A95E-488C-95FE-48E0C1AE2F09.jpegB107749C-FB3E-4203-9C28-C6FF0FEC0DCB.jpeg
