I'm wanting to make pedestal display stands for my backyard. What size do you recommend the top to be? Planned on making them with decorative timbers, 1x1's on top, and 2x4 or 2x6's underneath for support. Any other ideas/recommendations

Thanks!

How big are your trees? How windy is it in your area when it storms?

Then I'd say at LEAST 6 inches wider then the canopies of your trees, and make certain you have built-in hooks for tie downs.

Make them at least a foot wider (six inches each side) than the largest pot you have. Also make the table at belt height, at least, not any lower. Also dig at least 24 inches down to plant the post. Anything shallower and you could have smashed trees one after noon as the post lists and is overtaken by top heaviness.

You can also build in a turntable using lazy susan hardware you can buy at Home Depot. Turntables make turning larger trees a lot easier and safer. Spinning a large tree for even sun exposure can torque posts severely and break them -- I have larger trees, so I've learned all this the hard way.

Great idea. Do you have a picture of one with a turntable? Thanks.

The turntable mechanisms you get at HD or Lowes tend to spin rather easily. That does put a lot to torque on the posts, and tends to create a bit of centrifugal force on the tree, spinning it off the top. Be SURE you have good tie downs if you do that.
