I set up this display to honor the late Max Silten, long time member of Sei Boku Bonsai Kai of San Mateo CA. Max and I and about a dozen others were at the founding meeting of Sei Boku under the direction of the late Sensei Bob Kato.
Max was a professional graphic artist, and at the time a bonsai student of Kato-sensei.
When the Golden State Bonsai Federation was founded in 1978, Sensei was given the task of creating a logo. He sketched his ideas, then asked Max to create the finished product. Max did the job with his usual artistry and skill. The "scroll" in the center of the display is one of the first printings of the logo, which I am fortunate to be in possession of.
I chose a rock planting for the dieplay because Sensei loved rock plantings and created my enduring interest in them.
So, I honor both men. Gone but not forgotten. RIP.
