Well... there's a big difference between not knowing the 19th Amendment, and thinking that Bill Clinton got AIDS from Magic Johnson :)

Imagine for a moment you are a politician. Then imagine that someone shows up for your rally, and has all these strange ideas and misconceptions of the world, and it is your job to represent them in government. I think that is part of the reason why politicians over time just get used to saying whatever they think people want to hear, and then when they get elected they chart a different course.
 
The low info croud exists in both sides, for sure....
And it is funny...and sad.
I think you should have to pass a current events quiz with a 90% or higher to be able to vote....
Think that would help?

well kind of... but at least women's suffrage is taught to to everyone (whether they listen in class or not, its at least part of the curriculum)

i would think its more possible to have no idea about bill clinton/aids/magic, but... i could be fooling myself. i dont have near as much faith in public education or young people as i used to. maybe celebrity std's are more widely discussed these days.

Yeah that was a big one. Apparently it was two quakes simultaneously. Aftershocks still going on. Luckily not the destructive jolt kind that Christchurch had. More a rock an roller. Carried on forever. We didn't sleep all night because of the aftershocks. Interesting how my 3 mnths old puppy feels it coming before we can.
All in all we dodged a bullet here. Only one fatality when a house collapsed. Another died of a heart attack. Lots of structural damage to rails and roads. All buildings have to be inspected so the country is at a standstill atm.

I just looked at photos and the first thing that came up was broken store windows in Wellington. Glad to hear you're ok. I know they were warning about tsunamis, but I didn't hear about any.

Good to hear it. The power of nature is fascinating and on the other hand scaring. Oh, these catastrophies would deserve their own thread...

I think it would have been cool to see the US make a statement, and vote for an independent. I can't say I know a lot about them, but Nader or Paul would show the 2 parties people are fed up!

The problem is that all the alternatives are even more extreme in their views (if such a thing could be possible). The only viable 3rd party candidate would have to be a moderate - and if that were to happen, both Republicans and Democrats would shift their positions towards the center in order to squeeze out their support. It has happened in the past.

Bernie Sanders almost won the Democratic nomination - for the exact same reason that Trump won the Republican nomination. People are frustrated with the entrenched political insiders.
