Elm Through Tile

Well I have just stuck this in a pot and let it grow. I read the post about trunk thickening. Discussing constant trimming versus less frequent trunk chops. At 6 feet I think that it might be time for a cut. I am at a loss as to how short to cut. The trunk is at about 5/8 of an inch. I was thinking about cutting at 3 to 4 inches tall. Any thoughts? 20170821_195056.jpg 20170821_195113.jpg

Hi, I just can't resist a comment here, because there have been many many (etc) threads on this website that says if you trying to grow girth, you need to plant this tree in a huge landscape pot (up to 10 gallon, 45 litre) if you can't plant in the ground for a few years.
I just need to say that trying to grow a tree for girth in a bonsai pot or small colander is like trying to pee through a syringe. Lol, nothing happens.
My 2 cents, sorry to offend.

At 5/8ths of an inch....

You can go carrot pull a better elm right now!

I'd set in on the ground now, so in spring it has some roots already in earth....next year let all them branches rip!

You'll double or triple your 5/8, if not better.

My chinese elm is in about a 3 gallon pot, and its added at least 3/4 of an inch in the past 6 months. I'd say it's at least 2.5 inches now. From the growth rate I'm guessing it'll gain at least another 1/4 of in inch before winter sets in

Lack of ground space and overwintering space almost make the inground or big pot impossible. I'll work on things. Maybe I just need to rethink what I am working with.

I just re-read this thread. You write that you forgot about the tree for two years. I am curious as to if you fertilized at all? Could that be part of the problem?

Last year I had my first successful airlayers, they were very narrow, about 1\4 in. In January i moved them from small pots to the ground. The biggest one now is at least 1 1\4 in at the base. I fertilize regularly.

Is the over wintering in a bigger pot a problem because it's too tall now? If yes, if it was mine i would cut it to fit where I need to put it. Elms grow like crazy. Worry about getting a thick trunk then go from there.

I just saw this. The pot is fine, I have one that was a seedling that I pulled out of a parking lot that has been growing in a 3 gallon pot for about four years. It is now 10 feet tall and 3 inches in diameter.

I still have it in the pot. It was a "through the tile" project that did not turn out as expected. Ended up with a mass of roots above the tile after the cut so I stuck it in the pot. Now it is 2 1/2 years old and about 7' tall, 3/4" trunk diameter and I cannot get it to stay upright. No room to plant it in the ground. May just try to bury the pot for the winter and worry about it in the spring.
