BURNING BUSH CUTTINGS!!!!

These cuttings were started last Summer…..I strike a flat every season………also have lots of seed germinating to see how they sprout.

The plan is to start growth a few mnths early in co2 fertilization to increase size since these are a single push per season.

After taking a gander at the first cutting….I can picture a nice upright form with these…..although slow growing,I just love these trees.

BURNING BUSH CUTTINGS!!!!
I love this bushes! I wish they grew well here in central Texas, I had one when I was living in MD and love the colors. I tried planting one here and it went chlorotic the first year, after that it grew ok but never gave me any decent color in the 2 years I had it.

FINALLY GETTING JBP SEEDLING CUTTINGS POTTED ON FOR THE VEG GROW……..15 days!!!!!!!

This is very nice. They are rooting quite well.I dialed down the heat to just over 75F so they will stay healthy…….The 85F roots very quickly, but as soon as roots appear its time to cut it back to normal or you run the risk of anearobic bacteria.

So I potted 14 of these today I’m almost glad only 14 we’re ready or I would not be able to keep up and the roots get too big and you have to trim them. That definitely slowes them down in settling , and can actually kill some of them sometimes.

I just realized I meant to throw them into a cup of seaweed for about an hour and I completely forgot about it.The cutting would definitely get a head start…….. the next ones that are ready in a few days I’ll do that.
I’m glad I’m only potting up several every couple days……. They are staggered in growth from doing two trays every two days….. So it eases the workload tremendously having them not ready at the same time!!!

Big ,thick ,healthy roots when I use #2 Perlite that’s very aerated with just some Orchid spahgnum mixed into the media……. Much better than stonewool for rooting or vemiculite…….. roots are way healthier……. Just gotta’ spray in some water every five days.

I have some now in water soaking for four hours the kelp and fulvic acid water ….that is very ,very good technique for getting full rooting hundred percent of the time!!!!633183BF-E984-4B91-9786-2460F94F0735.jpeg1AA95F77-C9BF-448C-B9A6-69857367B7B7.jpegA32B7A3E-DEC8-46B9-A57F-B69F1E11E78F.jpeg

Have you ever tried planting some of these in a really shallow, wide piece if substrate to steer the roots outwards at this early stage?

It can be done as long as it is wide so there is no dehydration. If too shallow they will definitely dehydrate in a hurry like if it’s only a half inch thick something……I used that with a Siberian Elm air-layer.Then planted into a rootpouch with perlite and grow wool.
Could be a nice project for planting on a flat rooting platform or something.

The series of photos was all within eight months using a three month old outdoor grown sapling for air-layer.

I’m actually gonna’ pot it up in spring what the heck… given an early start and the CO2 probably and just have a little small bonsai tree.

I cannot wait to use the grade 3 perlite and I’m going to interlace it with some very fine layers of stonewool and experiment with bonsai soil‘s like that……. I will also tint the large grade#3 perlite with black humic acid on a regular basis and it nearly looks like akadama it’s so funny.

Can I make a special request? Can you plant 2 in those same wide thin cubes like you planted the Zelkova in so I can purchase when you put this batch on the market?

POTTING MORE JBP SEEDLING CUTTINGS

These are getting a 2 hour soak in 5:2 Fulvic/kelp!!!

I notice that a long drench in this very early stage when everything is clean will increase early budding…..more branching.

Striking these seedling cuttings at about 96%
All fully rooted and nice.

Curt, do you do anything special for your seed soak? Those rooted cuttings look awesome, so healthy and vigorous!

Seeds get kelp water……the powdered pure kelp powder……….for pine seeds I will soak 2-3 days and they all sprout within a week.No pre-treatment

AMUR MAPLE SEEDLINGS

I have lots of fresh seed so am planting a flat or two……after a mnth of cold stratification these start sprouting in the bag!!!!

It seems these do not like alot of co2……so maybe about 600 ppm.A nice early start.
I know the perfect spot to collect seed in Vermont!!!
I frequent the area several times a year.

Here are pics from today and also the Autumn harvest of fresh seed a few mnths ago in Vermont.

Potted more Pine, planted Larch and top dressed the Siberian Elm with shredded Stonewool.Foliar fed Burning bush seedlings.

Did lots of pine seedling cutting today….filled a whole tray.

Planted tiny Japanese Larch.
Also top dressed the Siberian Elm I rootpruned and potted yesterday. It will keep the top layer of the large grade per lite more solid and firm and also provide more moisture I did put very thin layers of stonewool in the interior of the pot too, but it’s only about 20% of the whole entire pot.

The burning bushes seem nice …some having a very nice extension…..I lost several to a ph meter error……. I did not have the patience to revive them and also I have tons of seed germinating.E193C293-2A53-447D-815A-863C9D06D94D.jpegF0818F5F-2792-4864-912B-2C0C92BA44CF.jpegFC21FF9F-8C02-409F-8213-98B0FA79CB3B.jpegE84F40E9-19C2-47B5-9468-B14AFBFA4DCA.jpeg75EAD701-DA9A-4715-BDBB-EBC15A091FC5.jpeg8A17FE6D-D216-4192-A1F0-5B7D72E1FD82.jpegCC533E12-B573-4F09-9A83-FDC6C010CFD3.jpeg

I’d buy that for a dollar.
Hmmmm.
Then I will grow 50000 of them!

All jokes aside……I want to grow more….the tents are full of Pines so these will have to be outdoors.
I am starting kabudachi’s in 2” stonewool mini-blocks today……about 5-10 of them.

Especially since I can get trunks like this in a year…….. starting indoors early helps big time in the CO2.

I just germinated seeds I love how they sprout after one day of water soaking and in a 2 inch stonewool block I’m going to plant at least 18 seedlings in each block and as they grow to a girth of this size they will fuse and look rather attractive.
I think I should just put some plastic on the ground outside and make quite a lot of these maybe I’ve just talked myself into it.
Such fast results.

I just need some cheap netting because Japanese beetles completely defoliate these.

PROGRESS OF SIBERIAN ELM BONSAI

I will start more of these…… Kabudachi‘s seem the way to go outside. They have such a better start when put into the stonewool blocks right away at germination especially a 2 inch or 3 inch mini-block……there’s just no room to sacrifice currently inside the grow tents, but I can start these outside very early in the season and get wonderful results……. The bases get quite hefty below the surface of the stonewool.
I’m anticipating a very nice Kabudachi with three-quarter inch trunks totally fused in these blocks planted with maybe 18 seedlings in each 2 inch block, but as they increase in growth they actually spread out and it makes a very fine bonsai starter.

Here is the progress from January to January…… one year with just an August sewn two month old seedling.

Ground-layering was almost unnecessary….. In a Kabudachi this will definitely not be an issue.

SIBERIAN ELM KABUDACHI ( indoor co2 starters).

While the vast majority of these will be started outdoors in Spring,It is fun to start some in co2 fertilization.

These are easy to make, albeit very time consuming…….22 little slimy seeds tucked into the holes…….these seeds become slimy after being wet for a few hours.

These are a very hardy germinating seed though.

After all these thicken till’about three-quarter inch in these 2” stonewool mini-blocks it should be a very sizeable Kabudachi starter!!!!4E7B7691-D3FB-4B26-A5DB-FEBDCB589EB6.jpegCE4D41F8-E509-41AF-9C71-9DA7A01D67C3.jpeg
