I believe I've reached a point on this Big Tooth Maple that I want to transition to refinement. I want to do a significant cutback on branches and rebuild them for ramification now that I've reached some limb size.
I feel like I'm finding conflicting information about this level of pruning at this time of year. What do you say? Now, or late winter?

Also, probably ready for a root prune. Do I need to separate these actions by a long period of time? Or will it provide balance to do them closer together? I.e branches now, roots late winter?

I'd avoid any root work as hard top pruning until late winter, unless you have a place to overwinter the tree that doesn't experience temps below 25 F or so. Extreme cold, sustained below 25F or lower can cause dieback on pruning wounds. It can also kill new roots.

I have 20 big tooth some for 30 yrs. I would not repot until just before they want to bud out. Please send more photos of these superb maples. I don't understand why they are not more popular.

I'm definitely following this thread. I've been trying to find this species, or even seeds, for a while now. It may be the only maple I can grow here in the desert.

I have quite a few collected and will be going out for more. Let me know if you want one.

You might try Montpelier Maple.....native as far south as the Mediterranean coast and known to grow in chalky soils and limestone outcroppings. I grew it in Wyoming and it's a tough species

I've bought from this seller on Etsy a couple times now. Had a few sprout the last time, but they didn't last. Pretty sure it was user error, though, so I got more that I need to start cold stratifying now.

He just collects them from the wild as he travels, so don't expect professional nursery levels of viability.
