First Tree of the Year, 2020 Edition

Goal is to attain few nursery stock trees this year and focus on collected material of high quality for personal use and for sale down the road. Choosing to focus on acquiring better pots for all of my trees.

with that said, I couldn’t resist this great little dwarf dogwood. Love the red twigging and plan to mostly clip and grow, though I’ll probably wire for initial shape. Here it is as purchased. Would love to keep it under 8” total and focus on dense ramification of the beautiful red twigs.

Columbus has a show usually in July. It’s getting better...I wouldn’t make a special trip for it but if you’re here already then stop in. Ashville is the only other show I’ve been to so far, but I think it’s pretty good. The Arboretum has a damn nice collection itself.

Yardadori dwarf ground cover rose with pink flowers. It s planted upright, but I like it as a slant better.

Just arrived at my door from Fresno and I am stoked!!! That’s my pinky for scale for the thorns/buds!

When I ordered these I put the pics from the store website in the 'Last Tree' thread but they didn't arrive until the 2nd so I believe they can count as my first trees of the year then.

First up is the Callistemon. There is probably a number of ways to go with this one but I'm going to pretty much leave alone and just try to develop some density and shape. A bit of wire maybe and take a few bits out that are redundant.
It also has a load of flower buds which should pop at some point so any trimming back will come after they are spent. Also going to look for a nice pot and reposition it a touch.

Now the second one I ordered was supposed to be a Celtis australis but they called to say the one I ordered shouldn't of still been listed and they can send something else but my wife took the call and she had no idea of the plant names so I'm not sure if they sent another Celtis or something else. lol
Guess I have to wait to spring to find out. This one might get a new pot too.

Does the bark on crape stay pretty smooth. I don't think I've seen a picture of a bonsai one before.

And I like the source pot 😁
I only have one other crape. They are both showing a bit of mottling of the bark, with that cinnamon color. Pretty cool. You should check out @VAFisher he has some very nice crapes posted.

1) is that a Holly?
2) are those root grafts?
That is an olive. The base is about 10 in. Talking about Holly I have 4 still sitting in pot ready to be hacked

Just paid my health insurance bill, no trees for me!
I have enough sticks in pots. I'm only allowing myself tree I dig personally, or trade dug trees for. We have the June 25 - 28 MABA/MBS 50th Anniversary Exhibition & Conference in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Lots of Vendors from all over, famous dude from Europe will be headliner. Dozens of other North American artists will be around. I am serving as Todd Schlafer's chauffeur for the weekend. I'm sure I will be tempted to drop an entire months income on something at that show. So I need restraint, and a second job for the coming weeks leading up to the show.

All you BNuts should come, buy stuff before I have a chance to.

I've sworn off buying any trees, but I did see a brace of Ezo spruce for auction and I almost reneged.
I'm dedicating myself to more native species collecting and the first up this year will be a vine maple that needs to be removed from a roadside ditch. It's gotten to where it's clogging the culvert though I can see it's been cut back a few times in the past. I'm expecting to find a nicely developed clump at the base. It's such a tangled mess I haven't seen the root base yet. It's still a little wintery out there and the moons on the rise. Oh crap! Did I say moon? Lolol! Well, I'm one of 'those' people who like to do my diggin's during the waning of the moon and my plantin's during the waxing. Please no scientific rebuttals and allow me this wee bit of madness. I'll be going after it in a couple of weeks.

That JBP is pretty legit. What's the dimensions?

Thanks for the compliment!

If i remember correctly, trunk above nebari should be around 4-5cm (close to 2inch) height should be close to 40cm (15 inch or so).

Did a half bare root, so going to let it grow for now and prune back once new shoot hardens.

Couple of junipers and firs from the local garden center and Cornus mas collected from the wild couple of years ago.
Need trees for learning.
